Our Story beginning in the depths of Hell...ok so maybe not hell. Remember last week when I was pissed about something that happened to me? Well here it is people. I feel better about the situation. I was nervous then but now Im cool..
Last thursday nite someone broke into the apartment above mine. No one is living there right now. The robber only took a handfull of items, not a lot of stuff. This was very unnerving for me. I thought he would have cleaned house since he was in there. So this is where my ghetto mind kicked in. I was sitting on at home thinking "man someone was there and took stuff. and he only took a few things?" Red flags came up and I KNEW he would be back. I decided, didnt really tell many people my idea, that I would try to catch him.
Next morning I got up. [That Friday was also big system shutdown day. So I could get to work late, around 10ish, if i wanted 2. So i took my time getting ready to leave.] When i got up I thought i heard some noises upstairs but i went outside and looked at door to upstairs and it looked fine. I thought i was just being paranoid.
Took my shower like normal, Mary went to work. I got dressed. Around 8ish I "left to go to work", I just went to the dunkin donuts by my house to get breakfast. :p
Came back home, parked around the block and got back to our lot. I looked around property for any suspicious stuff. Nothing out of place. Then I walked up the stairs for the apartment above. [The door is a sliding door and its behind a screen door. Its technically see-through.] So I peek into the apartment, and i see a flashlight scanning the room! I step back and look in and see someone is in there! Fight or flight! We all have heard about these situations. What would you do? I think i went with fight too fast. I try the door knob, its locked. I am wondering how the hell he got in there. So i cant get into the apartment, which looking back on the situation was a good thing, no need to get into a fight with a crook in a dark apartment when no one knows im there. So I bang on the door, to scare him, and it worked. I looked back into the apartment and he isnt there. I run down the stairs and start to look for him. I thinking how did he get in!!?! I knew it wasnt through the door im at, and i doubted it was from the front door. So im in the walk way looking around and then i see him pop out of a window i never noticed before. He SOMEHOW managed to come out a kitchen window! So he is crawling out the kitchen window onto a shed that is next to the building. [having that shed next to the window was too convienient for the bastard.] So he is like 15-20 feet from me. As he is out the window he spots me and i could tell i caught him totally off-guard. He just kinda looks at me with a "Crap! you got me dawg" face. He stands up and sorta shrugs at me. of course at this point i grab my phone and start to dial 911. At which he says " no please dont call the police. im homeless" And im like looking at him and dialing away thinkin so?!!!! He is a little more focused and he grabs his jacket, a box he took, his flashlight and his CROWBAR. He jumps over into the neighbors yard. Im on the phone with the 911 dispatcher, they ask too many questions, and i start to run to the front of the house. I run to the front of the house and go to the neighbors house. I go halfway into their walkway to their yards, thinking of being in the backyard with a guy with a crowbar wasnt something i wanted. So i run around out of there and around to the other side of street, and nothing. run up that block, and no sign of him! So so frustrated. As i go back to my house I see police car rolling up. I tell them what happened and stuff. So thats the basic core of my story. Im glad I got/scared him away. Wish i could have had him arrested at that moment.
Here is what i learned.
1. If you have a worry about something, act on it. Dont just worry about it, if you feel you may get robbed make sure you protect your property better.
2. If you find yourself in the situation I was in dont panic! Call the police before anything. Better safe than sorry.
3. Dont let things like this stop you from living you life. Yes it is/was scary but life goes.
4. If you see anything out of the norm in your area pay attention to it. Even if it not your property tell someone. Too many times I think people turn a blind eye on a situation if its not their stuff. Its better to help others because, for example in my case, if I dont try to stop this guy who know where else he might try to break into.
Anyways, thats what happened. See lots of weird things do happen in my life. Another story for my book ;)
