Park Life

To the Burrell Collection today for a bit of art.  Glasgow shipping merchant, Sir William Burrell,  spent  a lot of his money on art. And not just any old art: a bit of Rodin here, second century Roman vase there. Stained glass, tapestries, you name it he nabbed it.

The building housing all this glory is itself pretty impressive.  When he gave the collection to Glasgow, Burrell directed that it should be displayed in a rural setting. It took a long time to find somewhere suitable.  But in 1983 the Burrell Collection finally found its home in Pollok Country Park.

You'd never guess it, but the park is just five minutes from the city centre.

It's here that you'll also find Pollok House, home to another artistic collector.

During the eighteenth century, Sir William Stirling Maxwell became an authority on Spanish art.  His collection includes works by Goya and El Greco, and there's an interesting film in the house about the Spanish Hapsburgs.
