Another Sunday, Another Church

This is St Alphonsus'  in the east end of Glasgow. The architect was Peter Paul Pugin, whose grandfather designed the Houses of Parliament at Westminster.  The gothic connection is very clear, especially on the altar screen containing images of well-known saints.

It is a lovely building. I'm not sure about the pea-green colour of the wall, though. I prefer the original raspberry.

The church also has some fine stained glass. As well as the original images above the altar, new work appears at the back of the church, commissioned to celebrate the parish's 150th anniversary in 1996.

It's probably one of Glasgow's best-known churches, thanks to its location right next to the weekend Barras market. So, having topped up on spiritual nourishment, the faithful can go next door to worship at the altar of capitalism.
