German history: there's a lot of it, which probably accounts for the vastness and diversity of the German Historical Museum.








 


The museum doesn't shrink from the uncomfortable aspects of Germany's past.  The picture above (bottom left) is by a Belgian Jew, depicting his family in hiding from the Nazis.  There were also some stark and upsetting portraits of concentration camp inmates.  Their blank expressions appeared to show no understanding of what was about to befall them.



This lovely courtyard connects the old Zeughaus building with the new wing, designed by I. M. Pei.
