Pattern Review Checklist: 4016 Dress

Pattern Description
One piece belted dress

Pattern Sizing
Smallish- sized for a teenager probably rather than for an adult woman.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing it?
Yes but I am short and a bit stout instead of willowy like the woman on the pattern envelope!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
There were no instructions

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Super-comfy fit and looks great in a number of different fabrics!

Fabric Used
Cotton for the main part of the dress (top and bottom) and taffetta for the front panel. I bought curtain panels at a thrift store so I don’t really know how many yards/meters I used. There were 2 full-length cotton curtain panels and 2 full-length taffeta panels. I used only 1 of the taffeta panels.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Enlarged it since I am larger than the size the pattern was designed for. Also I did not make the cutwork collar for the dress. Instead I used bias binding to finish the neckline but am interested in making the collar the next time I sew this pattern.

Would you recommend this pattern to others?
Yes, but it is not for beginners.

Conclusion
I would have had a great deal more trouble with the upper parts of this dress had it not been for DomesticNews and her fantastic step-by-step explanations complete with pics! This is a great dress that can be adapted to fit a number of different figure types and that looks great in vastly different fabrics BUT good instructions are crucial for this dress.

Sewer’s Skill Level:
Advanced/professional

Pattern Rating: 1-Not a Fan, 2 - So-So, 3 - Good/Average, 4-Better than Average, 5-I LOVED IT! and why?
5 It is very comfortable to wear and looks good made up in different fabrics.

What skill level would someone need to sew this pattern and why?
Intermediate to advanced Well-written instructions will help a great deal but I don’t think a newbie would be comfortable fitting and sewing the top part of the dress.

Were the instructions easy to follow? If not, what needs to be changed?
No instructions!

How was the fit/sizing? Did it correspond to what you thought?
I knew before starting that this pattern would need alterations for my DD bust!

Did you make any pattern alterations? If so, what alterations did you make? Where they fit or design alterations?
Fit alterations because I have a DD size bust. Since the top is “bloused” over a belt, there is a little bit of leeway in the fitting. Plus, I left off the cutwork collar but I look forward to making this dress again and will include the collar.
