Book 45:
Julie E. Czerneda: In the Company of Others, 576 pages. I had serious trouble putting this book down while reading it, and considering the length, it swallowed a large amount of my time. The alien Quill have taken over Earth's terraformed worlds, stranding colonists on overcrowded space stations. Since the Quill Effect is deadly, no one has been able to grasp a sample to figure out a way to clear it off the colony worlds. Throw together a determined scientist, a man who survived the Quill Effect as a newborn, a jack-of-all-trades stationer, and a military officer with enough determination, and eventually the problem is solved. I didn't expect the solution presented at the end and was very pleasantly surprised. Characters are likable and (mostly) believable, and of course there's a nice little love story tucked inside the larger plot. 5 stars out of 5. Finish Date: 3 Aug 05.

Arkie Advertising Brings You:
readthealphabet is a new community (mine) for an "alphabet reading challenge". I got the idea off bookcrossing and thought an LJ community would be superb ground for it. 26 books in a year's time (you pick the date you start), with the catch being to try to complete the alphabet (either by book title or author's last name). If you're interested, the community is open membership.
More Arkie Advertising:
I discovered today that there were pending members for
theslushpile. I am rather ashamed to say I had not checked the membership list for quite some time, since none of the original group had been posting there. I authorized all the pending members for now and intend to post later about possibly giving the group a kick in the pants and get it going again. If anyone else is interested, feel free. There are some rather good critiquers in the membership there, and you don't even have to leave LJ to find them. ;-)
