I took a sick day from work yesterday and stayed home. I spent a large chunk of the day immersed in Edenborn, especially since the boys went to play with their friend R. because it was her birthday. I started - and finished - Edenborn. Granted, it's a slim novel, for sci-fi, but man... the last author to hook me that deeply was Charles de Lint. Unfortunately, I somehow missed that Idlewild is a prequel to this book (oops) so I am reading them out of order. No matter. Nick Sagan's books will definately find a home (sooner or later) on my bookshelf. I'll do a more formal review later.
The boys got a compliment from R's grandmother (our next door neighbor) yesterday, who said they were very well-mannered little boys and welcome to come over anytime. She's rather elderly (in her eighties), so we've always cautioned the boys not to ask to play inside, but take their energy (and noise) outside. But now she's given them permission for movie afternoons, so we shall see. It's nice to hear that they are behaving *out* of parental sight with non-family-members. You always wonder...
Their little playmate from when we first moved to this house is back for the summer, staying with his dad. He's the same as ever, but now even more unruly and undisciplined. He's already been banned from the neighbor's house (and playing with R.) because he disobeyed adult directions multiple times while playing there. It's sad, because he could probably be a wonderful kid - if someone would just teach him some manners and pay some attention to him. His little sister has said hi to the boys, but she spends all her time with a little girlfriend now and doesn't come over to play with them anymore.
And in keeping with the "boy post" this has become, we (hubby, J2, and I) drove poor J1 nuts Monday night. He is a very neat, orderly boy. His precious books (shared with J2 of course) number about 180 now, and they are alphabetized on their shelves (fiction in one bookshelf, non-fiction in another, more or less, and new ones on a third bookshelf). While he was busy playing keep-away over a little stress-ball with his dad and brother, I *ahem* rearranged his books. Then I hid a few, then a few more... Poor kiddo. He was plucking books out of his laundry hamper, tucked into his winter coat's inside pocket, in all the dresser drawers, etc. (Reminds me of when
amajos came to visit and one of the first things she did was rearrange all of hubby's cabinets to drive him batty.) He forgave Mommy for the prank and is now cataloging his collection for me to blend in with my "Books for Boys" part of my website.
Anyway, back to work. Not like anyone else is going to get anything done here.
