Naked-eye comet!
I just found out -- Comet 17/P Holmes had some sort of "event" that took it from 10th magnitude ("way dimmer than the naked eye could see" to any non-astronomy geeks) to currently magnitude 2.9 (about the dimness of a dim star -- should be fairly easily visible).
Astronomy mavens may want to go here.

Also, for current position and sky charts, etc. that are updated continually, check out one of my favorite astrononmy sites, Heavens Above, where you can also put in your latitude/longitude (or just nearest city) and find out when bright satellites are passing overhead, among many other things.
