one option often considered is to go back to school:

Then again, maybe not

Been busy. Eight days ago, Bossman said to us underlings that we all needed to allocate 14 days of time off from work (a kind of roll your own shutdown, as it were) before May, and I offered to take off last week, as I had a pile of things to do. And for the most part, I did take the time to do stuff: got my teeth worked on, got my first medical checkup in a while, and most importantly, I reworked my home work area so as to be more efficient and ready for having all of my work documentation here. and it only took three trips to Ikea to get it all together. My pile of things to do shrunk down to a mere folder....

Monday was a holiday, so I got to sit back and read all of the IBR stories on my lj friends list- ya know, one day I really do hope to attend one properly, je?

Last Tuesday, I logged into work from home, and found no one there. Turns out that exactly 20 minutes after I'd last logged out from the corporate 'net, Those On High had sent a notice on down that scrapped the roll your own shutdown model, and mandated three specific shutdown weeks instead, the first one being- surprise!- this very week.

Eep.

Eventually, others did show up online, as my group (usually) offers limited support during shutdowns. Bossman has kindly offered to let me adjust my time card so that I will get at least some pay for this check cycle. And then Those On High sent out another memo saying that there will be three *more* shutdown weeks, come the next quarter after this one, plus a promise of more layoffs. Which is par for the course, for these days

Well, at least I've gotten a spiffy desk. Ikea is insidious- I'm planning to sell off some CDs, to raise money for desk accessories...
