Chapter 5
“What the hell is happening?” Mark bellowed out over the noise of machines going off. The nurses and Alex were working like mad as Teddy and Tahan ran into the room.
“Karev,” Tahan stated and Alex shook his head.
“I have no idea ma’am, one minute she was fine, the next her stats jumped all over the place,” Alex explained.
“Doctor? Do you want to administer adrenaline?” the nurse held up the syringe and Tahan looked at her.
“I told her to prep it but not to be administered until you called the order,” Alex explained.
“No adrenaline,” Tahan said, “Roll her onto her left side. Arms up over her head.”
“Ma’am?” Alex was confused.
“Just do it Karev,” Tahan shouted and the fellow did as he was told.
“Does someone want to tell me what the hell is going on?” Mark yelled out again.
“Shut up Mark!” Teddy yelled at the scared father, “Let Dr Cooper work here.”
“There’s too many people in here. Everyone out except for Karev, Altman and myself,” Tahan couldn’t think with all the noise. The interns and nurses, as well as a reluctant Mark all left the room.
“Has this happened before?” Teddy asked Tahan and Tahan shook her head.
“We’ve missed something. There’s something else going on with this little girl. Her obs are stabilizing so let’s use this opportunity to find out what it is. Karev, bloods and cultures. Put a rush on them,” Tahan ordered and Alex did as he was told. As soon as he left the room, Tahan looked at Teddy, “Have you seen this before?”
“No,” Teddy shook her head as she went over the charts again, trying to find something, anything.
“Doctors?” They both looked up as Chief Bailey entered the room.
“We’re working on it Chief,” Tahan said and Chief Bailey nodded.
“This patient is a priority. Let me know if you have any trouble getting that point across to any departments,” Chief Bailey stated before leaving the room. Tahan looked up at the window and saw not only Mark but also Callie and Arizona. All three were looking in, pleading in their eyes. Tahan had to find an answer here. She could not lose this child.
“We need Shepherd,” Tahan stated and Teddy nodded, leaving the room to page the neurosurgeon.
“Tahan?” Arizona had slipped into the room when Teddy left and Tahan turned to face her girlfriend.
“I need for you to do something for me,” Tahan said and Arizona nodded, “Take Sofia’s parents and get their bloods drawn and sent to the lab. I need for them to be cross matched with Sofia’s for everything and anything.”
“There’s more going on here isn’t there? It’s not just this disease that’s doing it to her.”
“I don’t know what’s going on yet Arizona, I’ve never seen anything like this before, not at this extent.”
“What do you mean, not at this extent?”
“Some of the patients in my clinical trial, they showed signs of small cardio abnormalities after the second surgery. It’s how I figured out that they needed to be in an induced coma for three days after that surgery.”
“So why can’t you put Sofia in an induced coma now?” Arizona asked and Tahan shook her head.
“Putting her in an induced coma now will stop her heart,” Tahan whispered, looking up as Teddy came back into the room, “She’s stabilized for now but for how much longer, I have no idea.”
“I’ll go get the bloods drawn,” Arizona squeezed Tahan’s arm before leaving the room.
Tahan had Sofia transferred to the ICU unit in Pediatrics and sat by the four year olds bedside over the next couple of hours as all the testing was performed. Dr Shepherd had been in but there wasn’t any explanation he could offer to shed some light on the situation.
“Should we be making preparations?” Tahan looked up from where she was jotting down notes in Sofia’s chart and looked at Mark who was sitting on the other side of the bed. She couldn’t give the parents any answers, “Calling our family?”
“That is entirely up to you. I’m going to do everything I can to make her well again,” Tahan answered.
“Addison is on her way, bringing Declan with her,” Callie walked back into the room and told Mark.
“Will we need to have Declan tested too?” Mark looked at the doctor overseeing his daughters care and Tahan looked questioningly at him.
“Who is Declan?” she looked between Callie and Mark and saw them exchange looks too.
“Declan is Sofia’s brother. Twin brother,” Mark answered and Tahan closed her eyes and counted to ten in her head, trying to keep her anger in check.
“Why is that information not in the charts?”
“We didn’t think it was imperative,” Mark answered, “he’s not sick.”
“You guys are surgeons. You know that all and any information is imperative. Had you told me this information earlier…” Tahan sighed loudly as she stood up, shaking her head, “Let me know when he is here.”
“A twin?” Teddy gasped in shock and Tahan nodded as she poured through her research, “Shit. Does Arizona know?”
“I don’t know. I doubt it. Unfortunately, that’s not a priority for me right now. Declan may hold the key to our solution right now,” Tahan found what she was looking for and started reading, Teddy reading over her shoulder.
Arizona handed both Callie and Mark a cup of coffee, giving Callie’s arm an affectionate squeeze.
“Dr Cooper will find an answer,” she whispered and Mark gave Callie a pointed look, something which didn’t go amiss by the blonde, “What?”
“I have to tell you something,” Callie looked down guiltily, “and you’re probably going to be mad.”
“O…K,” Arizona said quietly.
“We withheld information. I withheld information,” Callie sighed, looking up at her ex girlfriend, a look of pleading in her eyes that the blonde won’t be too mad, “Sofia has a twin brother.”
“Why would you not tell your doctors that?” Arizona snapped and Callie cringed.
“I didn’t… I didn’t want everyone to know my business. Coming here with a sick daughter was hard enough,” Callie answered and Arizona scoffed.
“You mean you didn’t want me to know,” she mumbled and Callie nodded slowly, “Where you planning on telling me?”
“Yes,” Callie whispered desperately, “Of course I was Arizona.”
“Are there more?” she asked accusingly and Callie shot Mark a look before sighing, “Of course there is.”
“No, there aren’t. Not…” Callie’s voice hitched.
“We had another son, he died when he was two months old,” Mark said and Arizona’s heart tugged for the parents.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered before realization hit her, “Can I ask what he died of?”
“SIDS. His heart just stopped,” Mark answered sadly and Arizona ran from the room.
Tahan and Teddy both jumped when Arizona ran into the room.
“Sofia has a twin brother,” Arizona announced and the look between Teddy and Tahan told her that they had already found that out, “She also had another brother who died when he was two months old from SIDS. His heart just stopped.”
“That explains a lot,” Tahan told Teddy and Teddy nodded, “all which could’ve been avoided had the parents offered this information from the beginning.”
“The point is we know now,” Teddy sighed before looking up at Arizona, “we all know.”
“So what’s the plan then?” Arizona asked, ignoring the hidden innuendo of Teddy’s comment.
“The plan now is that you need to leave the room and let us make a plan,” Tahan mumbled, barely taking her eyes off of the paperwork in front of her.
“Wh… just like that?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that to sound harsh. I need to concentrate,” Tahan did look up this time and Arizona smirked before nodding.
“I get it. I’m a distraction. It’s a curse,” Arizona left the room and Teddy rolled her eyes.
“I swear, if she chooses Torres over you…”
“You’ll accept it and move on,” Tahan told her best friend, “can we focus on saving a child’s life now please?”
Tahan and Teddy were standing outside of the PICU when Dr Addison Montgomery arrived, a young boy gripping her hand. As soon as the four year old saw his parents, he let go of the redhead’s hand and ran, launching himself at his Momma who caught him and held him close. Tahan gave the family a little time to reconnect before interrupting.
“Addison, this is Dr Cooper,” Callie introduced the two women when Tahan walked into the room.
“Dr Montgomery,” Tahan nodded, shaking hands with the renowned redhead.
“Dr Cooper. I understand you’ve got some answers,” Addison stated and Tahan nodded, turning to the boy who was shying away in his father’s arms.
“But in order to help me, I’m going to need a very special helper,” she smiled at the boy who looked at his father, seeing the man nodding his head in encouragement.
“I help,” he offered and Tahan played along.
“You will? Oh that will be absolutely awesome! Dr Karev,” Tahan turned to the fellow who walked in armed with the items she had specified, “Dr Declan here is going to need his lab coat and his clipboard.”
Mark set his son on the floor and helped the four year old put the overlarge lab coat on.
“I’m ready,” the boy announced, holding his clipboard the same way Tahan was holding Sofia’s chart.
“Awesome. Shall we see if Momma or Daddy want to come along?”
“No, I’m a big boy,” the four year old scowled and his parents chuckled.
“Momma and Daddy okay with that?” Tahan asked and they nodded.
“Perfect. Come on then Dr Declan, lets get to work,” Tahan held her hand out for the boy and he placed his hand in hers without so much as a backward glance at his parents as he followed his new idol out of the room.
Tahan picked the boy up and sat him on the bed in front of her.
“Alright, first we need to put some gloves on,” Tahan announced, handing the boy a pair of gloves before putting her own on. She saw Callie and Arizona standing in the doorway but didn’t bring it to the boy’s attention. She ignored the look in Arizona’s eyes as her girlfriend watched her, not needing to be distracted by the adoration and love she could see shining in those blue orbs.
“Glubs on,” the boy announced and Tahan smiled approvingly.
“Perfect. Now, we need to listen to our chests. Make sure our hearts are beating properly. Do you want to listen to mine first and then I’ll listen to yours?” The boy nodded enthusiastically and Tahan smiled as she placed the stethoscope in the boys ears before holding the round end against her chest.
“Oooh,” he exclaimed excitedly, “I can hear your heart.”
“My turn,” Tahan smiled after a minute and this time she put the stethoscope in her own ears while placing the round end against the boy’s chest. Once she was satisfied, she jotted some notes down in the chart and smiled when she saw Declan copy her actions. Dr Karev entered the room, pushing the blood collection trolley in front of him and Tahan sat up on the bed next to Declan, nodding for Arizona to join them.
“What’s that?” Declan asked warily, leaning into Tahan’s side as he looked at Dr Karev a little fearfully.
“Ah, I don’t like this bit,” Tahan whispered, “We need to get some blood taken and sent off to make sure we’re good enough to be doctors. Will you hold my hand while Dr Robbins takes my blood?”
“Yes,” Declan took the brunette’s hand in his, “You need to be brabe.”
“I do need to be brave. But you know what would make me so much braver? If we both got it done at the same time. What do you think? Think you could let Dr Alex take your blood while Dr Robbins takes mine?” He thought about it for a minute before slowly nodding, “Awesome. Now remember, don’t let go of my hand and maybe we should look at each other. You can tell me a story.” Tahan nodded for Alex and Arizona to start as Declan squeezed her hand tight.
“What sort of story?” Declan asked, a tremble in his voice. Tahan saw Callie in the corner of her eye, about to come into the room but she shook her head at her and she stopped, trusting that Tahan knew what she was doing.
“Anything. How about…?”
“Dinesaws?”
“Dinosaurs, perfect. You tell me a story about dinosaurs and remember, you’ll feel a little pinch in your arm there but just keep looking at me,” Tahan beamed down at the boy who nodded, launching into a story about fire breathing dinosaurs who eat people and live on the moon.
“You made quite an impression on Declan,” Arizona smiled as she leaned against the doorframe leading into the conference room.
“He’s a good kid,” Tahan shrugged, rubbing her face tiredly.
“You’re amazing,” Arizona whispered, stepping into the room and behind her girlfriend, giving the brunette a shoulder massage.
“Yeah, I kind of am,” Tahan agreed cockily and Arizona chuckled before dropping a kiss on the top of her head.
“So did you get the results back?”
“I did. And I was right. Declan has the antibodies that will help Sofia heal enough for her second surgery,” Tahan nodded, taking Arizona’s hands from her shoulders and turning the chair around and pulling the blonde down to sit on her lap, “I don’t foresee any more complications.”
“So that’s it then?” Arizona asked, leaning her head against her girlfriend’s.
“Alex is organizing the transfusions. This time tomorrow, I expect Sofia to be awake and healing in preparation for her second surgery,” Tahan nodded, snuggling her nose into Arizona’s neck.
“You should go home and get some sleep,” Arizona whispered, stroking Tahan’s hair.
“Alone?”
“Yes alone,” Arizona chuckled, feeling the brunette pouting against her neck, “Because you are in serious need of sleep.”
“Who says I can’t sleep with you there?” Tahan mumbled.
“I say. Besides, I still have work to do here,” Arizona said but Tahan knew she also had already made plans with Callie when she finished.
“Hmm, okay,” Tahan gave in, too tired to try and convince Arizona otherwise, “but can we have five more minutes snuggle time here?”
“You can have ten minutes,” Arizona whispered.
“I should probably get going,” Callie looked at her watch and stood up from Arizona’s sofa, placing her empty wine glass on the coffee table.
“Right,” Arizona stood up too, following her ex girlfriend to the door but not wanting the ortho surgeon to leave just yet. They had spent the last few hours talking, really talking. About Sofia and Declan. About Douglas, the baby that Arizona never got to meet. About life in LA. Callie finally let all of her secrets out, no longer holding back from the blonde she wanted to spend the rest of her life loving.
“Thank you, for listening and not… telling me to get lost,” Callie turned around to face the blonde before opening the door. Arizona reacted before she could think and crashed her lips against the brunette’s. Her body crashed against the curvy woman’s, the door behind keeping them upright as passion ignited between the two.
“Don’t go,” Arizona breathed out between kisses, her fingers finding the zipper on the back of Callie’s dress and slowly she started sliding it down.
“Are you sure?” Callie asked breathlessly, her body aching for the woman in front of her.
“I’m sure,” Arizona stopped unzipping the dress and grabbed Callie’s hands, pulling her along as she walked backwards toward her bedroom, “Please Calliope.”
“Oh God,” Callie whispered as they crossed over the threshold into Arizona’s room, no longer holding back as she pushed the blonde onto the bed and followed her.
Arizona felt torn. She had no regrets but guilt filled her anyway.
“You slept with her,” Teddy announced, setting her tray down on the table next to Arizona and sitting down.
“Please don’t lecture me Teddy,” Arizona sighed, “I’m doing that enough.”
“Look, I’ll admit, I’m a huge Tahan fan. I think she is the right person for you but I’m not you. I will always be your friend Arizona, regardless of what choices you make. I’m sorry I’ve been unsupportive the last couple of days. I don’t envy you at all,” Teddy told her friend and Arizona was appreciative.
“You think Tahan is the right choice for me?”
“I think Tahan hasn’t done anything to make you question her trust, her love,” Teddy shrugged, “but like I said, I’m not you. I just want you to be happy Arizona, that’s all.”
“They both make me happy,” Arizona sighed, looking down into her sad lunch and screwing her nose up at it before pushing it away.
“If they both make you happy, why do you look so miserable right now?” Teddy asked but didn’t expect an answer, knowing Arizona just needed to be alone with her thoughts.
