Chapter 4
“Diggy needs me NOW!” Arizona walked into Sofia’s room the following morning to see Mark snoring on the day bed while the females in the room were arguing.
“Diggy isn’t here sweetie. Momma forgot to bring him. I promise, I will get him later and bring him in,” Callie was trying to reason with her four year old about a stuffed dog that was in desperate need of being binned.
“No. Now! Daddy get him,” Arizona could see the Torres temper shine through on the four year old and she found it endearing.
“I’m sorry,” Callie apologized when she saw the blonde waiting by the door and Arizona shook her head as she entered the room.
“Who dat Momma?” Sofia asked her mother and Callie chuckled at her daughter’s bluntness.
“That is a friend of Momma’s. Her name is Dr Robbins,” Callie told her daughter, “She’s kind of awesome.”
“She is?” Sofia fell for her mother’s dramatic whispering and Callie nodded her head seriously, “She fix me Momma?”
“No baby, Dr Robbins is too good to fix you. Dr Cooper is the one who fixed you, remember? And all those other wonderful doctors you saw yesterday?”
“Wake Daddy Momma? Me really need Diggy,” Sofia pouted, no longer caring about the doctors and her mind returning to her beloved stuffed dog.
“Poor Daddy. He needs his sleep baby,” Callie tried appealing to the girl’s sympathetic side but Sofia’s stubbornness was sticking.
“Diggy. Diggy. Diggy. Diggy.”
Arizona tried to hide her smirk when the girl started chanting.
“I tried,” Callie sighed, walking over to Mark and kicking his leg, causing the man to bolt awake, “Your daughter is demanding that stupid dog you brought her.”
“Poor Diggy,” Mark rubbed his eye before realizing that Arizona was in the room too, “Robbins.”
“Mark,” Arizona acknowledged Callie’s best friend, Sofia’s father.
“Daddy! Diggy!” Sofia scowled and Mark held his hands up in surrender.
“What my daughter wants, my daughter gets,” Mark leaned down and kissed his daughter before leaving the room.
“And he wonders why she doesn’t listen to me,” Callie rolled her eyes before beaming at the blonde, “But hi.”
“Hi,” Arizona giggled, blushing slightly.
“Hi,” Callie whispered once more, the smile spreading across her whole face.
Tahan was too busy looking through the overnight notes as she followed Derek, Teddy and Alex into Sofia’s room that she didn’t notice Arizona sitting next to Callie until it was too late.
“So, how are we feeling this morning Miss Sofia?” Tahan tried to ignore Arizona being in the room, remaining professional as she smiled at the four year old while checking her over.
“Momma didn’t bring my Diggy, so I feeling cranky,” the four year old was nothing if not honest.
“Cranky is good. At least if you’re feeling cranky it means you’re not hurting too much,” Tahan chuckled, “So tell me about Diggy.”
“Diggy is my doggy. Daddy got him when I borned,” Sofia started talking about her beloved dog while Tahan checked her incisions without any trouble, the young girl too distracted.
“Well I can’t wait to meet him,” Tahan beamed as she finished tucking the sheet around the girl, “Do you mind if I steal your Momma for a little bit?”
“Mmm-mmm,” Sofia shook her head and Tahan moved the group of doctors outside, Callie following them while Arizona stayed to keep the four year old company. Tahan stood at the window that looked into the room, unsure what to make of the sight before her. She turned to face Sofia’s mother.
“I’m quite happy with the incisions this morning,” Tahan knew that Callie could sense there was a but coming. The downside of talking to parents who were surgeons.
“But…” Callie prompted her.
“Her enthusiasm levels right now are way higher than what they should be. Most kids are sleepy for days after the first surgery. It’s why the second surgery doesn’t take place until a week after the first one. It gives the body time to heal and reenergize in order to cope with the second surgery. Her adrenaline levels a little higher than I’d like them to be,” Tahan turned to Teddy so she could take over.
“After a surgery on the heart, the heart needs rest. Sofia’s heart rate is higher than we’d like them to be and if we don’t settle her down and give her body a chance to heal, she may do more damage,” Teddy gave it to her bluntly, even Tahan cringed slightly.
“What I’d like to do is administer a sedative,” Tahan could see the shock and worry on the mother’s face so she reached out and put her hand on Callie’s shoulder, “This will help her.”
“Then yeah, do it. If it’s going to help her,” Callie nodded, looking through the window and Tahan followed her gaze, seeing Arizona looking up at them both, knowing that something was wrong.
“I thought being awake and alert after a surgery was a good thing?” Arizona cornered Tahan and Teddy in the cafeteria.
“In most cases, yes. But with this method that Tahan has written and researched and created, no,” Teddy drove home the point that Tahan knew what she was talking about.
“I’m sorry if that came across like I was accusing you, I was merely curious. From a professional point of view,” Arizona shot Teddy a questioning look, unsure where the hostility was coming from.
“Ignore Teddy, she got rejected last night and she’s been nothing but a moody bitch all day,” Tahan also shot Teddy a look and Teddy just rolled her eyes, “In order for this surgery not to do any damage to Sofia’s heart, we need to keep it below a certain level.”
“So it doesn’t overexert?” she asked and Tahan nodded.
“Karev will keep an eye on her and will page me if any more complications arise,” Tahan looked at her watch and sighed, “And now I need to go and prep my appendectomy. Because I love looking at appendixes.”
“How do you manage to make appendixes sound so sexy?” Arizona smirked, earning a fake laugh from Tahan.
“Lame Robbins,” she shook her head and Arizona chuckled as she watched her girlfriend walk away before turning to Teddy and putting her hands on her hips.
“Now do you want to tell me the real reason why you’re being such a bitch?”
Arizona couldn’t stop going over her earlier conversation with Teddy. Teddy was her best friend, she’s been there through everything and she really valued the cardio’s opinion. But she felt like she was being made out to be the bad guy here. She had to do what was the right thing for her. She knew that she was going to break somebody’s heart at the end of this, and she wasn’t looking forward to that at all. But she needed to find out what her heart wanted and right now, her heart didn’t know. Arizona banished everything Teddy said from her mind when there was a knock on the door. She checked her appearance one last time in the mirror by the front door before opening it, her smile spreading right across her face as she saw Calliope.
“Calliope,” Arizona breathed out, her heart skipping a beat when her ex girlfriend gave her one of those awesome smiles.
“Wow, you look beautiful Arizona,” Callie took in the woman before her.
“Thank you. Come in,” Arizona stood back and held the door open a little wider, welcoming Callie into her apartment. Callie had never been inside before. After she had left, Arizona couldn’t stay in the apartment that they shared together and she moved out, finding this place on the next block.
“This is a beautiful apartment Arizona,” Callie commented as she looked around.
“Would you like a glass of wine?” Arizona asked and Callie nodded as she stepped up to the bookshelf, looking through the pictures Arizona had on display. She smiled at the photo of the elderly couple she knew to be Arizona’s parents, the photo of Arizona’s late brother in his uniform and the picture that Callie had taken herself of Teddy and Arizona at a hospital Christmas party the year before the whole Malawi fiasco. As she moved on to the next photo, she couldn’t help but take the framed picture in her hand. Arizona moved beside Callie, looking to see which picture she was admiring and was surprised to see it was the one of Tahan and herself.
“You look so happy,” Callie commented softly. Arizona held out the wine glass to Callie before taking the picture from her ex girlfriend’s hand and replacing it back on the bookcase.
“Does that make you sad?” Arizona queried and Callie sighed as she looked around before settling her gaze on the woman she’d never let go of in her heart.
“It makes me wonder what I’m doing here. What you’re doing.”
“I don’t understand,” Arizona indicated for them to sit on the sofa.
“You moved on and you were happy before I returned with my sick daughter,” Callie sighed, indicating the photo on the bookshelf, “As much as I want to hate Dr Cooper, I just can’t. Not only is she doing everything to save my baby girl but she’s so selfless when it comes to you. She’s prepared to risk her relationship with you in order to allow you to follow your heart.”
“Tahan was so patient with me,” Arizona admitted and Callie turned to face her, encouraging Arizona to go on, “She arrived not long after you left. She was so broken and fragile professionally while I was broken and fragile privately, although, at Seattle Grace Mercy West, nothing is really private. She was Teddy’s friend from the army days and we became a trio. Teddy really does deserve a medal for what she went through to help us both. Tahan recovered quicker than I did, although sometimes I wonder if she’s still recovering but is just really good at hiding it. Anyway, her feelings for me shifted sometime during her twelve month contract but she knew I wasn’t ready. So she renewed her contract. It took her three years to break me down, that’s how I knew that I could risk my heart on her.”
“Then why are you doing this?” Callie asked softly and Arizona sighed, reaching over to take Callie’s hand in hers.
“Because I am still in love with you too,” she whispered, bringing Callie’s hand up to place a kiss on the tanned knuckles.
