The Moonlight Butterfly
The Sea and Cake
2011
The Moonlight Butterfly is as fluttery, delicate, and vibrant as it sounds but still manages to rock. This is the ninth album from the Sea and Cake, an indie super group comprised of members from ’90s bands the Cocktails, Shrimpboat, and Tortoise, who inflect a jazz sensibility into their mellow, guitar-based pop songs. Without too many frills or fireworks, there is a feeling of groovy experimentation in their music. Acoustic instruments interplay with synthesizers and you can hear sounds being sculpted by a collective. Thanks to the subtly poetic lyrics and the mellow, Britpoppy vocals of guitarist Sam Prekop, the Sea and Cake’s songs tend to feel like songs rather than compositions or loose jams.
The album is a tight six tracks, beginning with “Covers,” a steadily up-tempo track introduced by a sitarlike flourish, which features a vocal track with playful rhythms backed by dreamy chords and spacey swooshes. “Lyric” turns the spaciness up another notch with swirling synth sounds and rippling harplike guitar beneath Prekop’s refrain, “upon the lyrical outside.” The title track is solely dedicated to rendering the striking image of a moonlight butterfly through sound. Lyrics, vocals, and guitars are jettisoned in favor of a fluttering of robotic bells counterpointed by synthesized bass.
On “Up on the North Shore” the band clambers back down to earth with a catchy, up-tempo guitar-and-vocal-driven pop tune with only traces of the ethereal-Prekop’s whispered refrain of “I don’t know” and the appearance of distorted synth on its tail end. “Inn Keeping” is built on the sound of a quickened pulse introduced by Eric Claridge’s bass and picked up John McEntire’s drums. It’s a long and lyrical song in which six minutes of thoughts dissolve into four minutes of pure feeling. “Monday,” the album’s closer, is sweetly soulful and just a little bit funky. Like much of the album it’s a pop song with unusual rhythms and a textured background with synth effects that glide it toward an ambient vibe.

Plan to Persuade
Sagittarius Daily Horoscope
You could feel like you are easily able to persuade others of your own opinions today. It might seem that your ideas are more logical than those of people around you. This may be due to your confidence in both your abilities and your ideas. Perhaps today you can consider drawing up a concrete plan of action, which can help you arrange your thoughts before putting them before other people. You may find that people are more receptive to your opinions when you have prepared a proposal detailing specific information. As you present your ideas you will be able to refer back to what you have designed, which allows you to speak with greater self-confidence. It is important to remember that most people can be won over not only with a convincing argument but can also be impressed with a sound plan.
When we are organized and sure of our objectives, we can more easily convince others of the validity of our ideas. We may notice that when we have good ideas and simply talk about them without preparation, they may receive a lukewarm response. Carefully outlining what we need to say helps us clarify our thoughts and stimulates our own ability to speak with confidence. Our ideas will always be more influential when we are able to defend them confidently. Plan your ideas today, and you will more effectively convince others that your ideas work.

Sitting with Our Sadness
The Heart of Humanity
by Madisyn Taylor
Sitting with our sadness takes the courage to believe that we can bear the pain and we will come out the other side.
The last thing most of us want to hear or think about when we are dealing with profound feelings of sadness is that deep learning can be found in this place. In the midst of our pain, we often feel picked on by life, or overwhelmed by the enormity of some loss, or simply too exhausted to try and examine the situation. We may feel far too disappointed and angry to look for anything resembling a bright side to our suffering. Still, somewhere in our hearts, we know that we will eventually emerge from the depths into the light of greater awareness. Remembering this truth, no matter how elusive it seems, can help.
The other thing we often would rather not hear when we are dealing with intense sadness is that the only way out of it is through it. Sitting with our sadness takes the courage to believe that we can bear the pain and the faith that we will come out the other side. With courage, we can allow ourselves to cycle through the grieving process with full inner permission to experience it. This is a powerful teaching that sadness has to offer us-the ability to surrender and the acceptance of change go hand in hand.
Another teaching of sadness is compassion for others who are in pain, because it is only in feeling our own pain that we can really understand and allow for someone else’s. Sadness is something we all go through, and we all learn from it and are deepened by its presence in our lives. While our own individual experiences of sadness carry with them unique lessons, the implications of what we learn are universal. The wisdom we gain from going through the process of feeling loss, heartbreak, or deep disappointment gives us access to the heart of humanity.
