The Warm Chill
TJ Rehmy
2004

Born in Birmingham, England, to Indian parents, Rehmi taught himself to play guitar by ear. He mastered the complicated solos of artists like Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa before falling in love with Indian fusion. Later, he helped form the hybrid of Indian music and British drum-and-bass known as bhangra (he was the first to add reggae bass lines). Bringing his unique blend of talents and interests to bear for what many consider his masterwork, The Warm Chill, Rehmi brings plenty of reggae bass, but also traverses the world, bringing in everything from the sitar to flutes and sarangi.

The opener, "You Are We Am I," coasts along on a funky groove with Rehmi's guitar noodling high overhead in cycling arpeggios, while the title track mixes vocal samples and ominous synths in such a way as to invite the chill it describes. "Axis of Ignorance" slides blazing sarangi reflections across a skittering drum-and-bass conveyer belt. While Rehmi's influences are literally all over the map, it's clear he has a soft spot for the echo-drenched, slowed-down beat system known as dub, which reaches a kind of abstract peak with "Xcentric," which mixes guitar and female Middle Eastern vocals in a single unique hybrid sound that coasts over a tabla and synth beat in a looping warm-sea swim, segueing as if it was most natural thing in the world into a hot night with crickets and a lonesome gong, a reggae bass line and a fret-bending yet supremely confident, minimalist, and mellow electric guitar.

Rehmi's guitar plays throughout the album, judicially, wisely, like a patient sage, sometimes echoing and soaring, sometimes just sitting behind the action and occasionally running down the frets. Rehmi is no show-off; he’s a passionate musical visionary who brings the whole world together in a simple yet perfect palette of musical-ethnic colors. Close your eyes and let the beats bring you ever closer to the magical root-cellar center wherein throbs the rhythmic key for all races, villages, nations, and cultures to vibe with each other. These are the frequencies that connect your heart to the center of the world. The Warm Chill, as its name implies, makes you shiver with the ecstatic earthy centeredness of that first celebratory noise around the fire, a declaration of freedom from fear of what lurks outside the circle in the dark, cricket-filled night.

Journaling Before Speaking
Sagittarius Daily Horoscope

Your conversations may be deeper today because of your serious mood. This frame of mind could be the product of your yearning for a greater understanding of the world around you, which could also leave you pondering the more profound aspects of life. You may notice a solemnity that may have an impact on your interactions with those around you. Keeping this in mind, it might be a good idea to allocate time to focus on your questions before you communicate them to others today. You could consider journaling as a way to more closely
examine your ideas, as your thoughts may lead to improved insights. Take a few moments to write down the issues that seem to be on your mind, trying not to let logic influence your deeper intuitions. You may find you can better articulate the ideas you have as a result.

Thinking about thought-provoking ideas before we engage in discussions can help us more easily communicate them to others. There are times when we want to have more profound interactions with others, which they may not be prepared for. In this
case, the intensity in our interactions can be daunting. If our ideas are sorted out first, we have a better hold on what we truly think. We are more able to have serious conversations but with a level of detachment because we have already worked through our ideas. As you give your ideas some time to first filter through you today, you will find the right level of depth in your interactions.

Life Packaging
The Gift Inside
by Madisyn Taylor

We are all spiritual beings living in a human body even though our packaging seems different, we are very much the same.

We have all had the experience of encountering someone whose life seems so completely different from ours that we can almost imagine we have nothing in common. However, if we go deeper into observing, we will see that we all have the same things going on in our lives. It is as if our different lives are in essence the same gift, wrapped in an infinite variety of containers, wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows. Everybody experiences loss, grief, happiness, excitement, anger, and fear. Everyone can have money issues of one kind or another, and everyone struggles with difficult choices.

Our lives show up differently for each one of us because we each learn in different ways. One person may need to learn the value of money by having too little of it, while another may need to learn by having more than enough. We each learn about work and love, with experiences that are tailored to our particular perspective. Even as it appears that some people have it easy while others are in a continual state of struggle, the truth is that we are all learning, and it is very difficult to tell, when looking only at the exterior of a person, what’s going on inside.

This is one of the many things that can be so valuable about cultivating relationships with people from all walks of life. As we get to know those who seem so different from us, we get to really see how much of life’s challenges and joys are universal. We begin to look beyond the packaging of skin color, clothing preferences, and socioeconomic differences, hairstyles, and the cars we drive to the heart of the human experience. It is important to honor and value the differences in our packaging, but it is just as important to honor the gift of life inside each one of us, and the fact that, no matter how different the packaging, the gift inside is the same.
