Smell is one of the most powerful aids to memory I know, and one of the senses that is able to illicit some of the strongest emotional responses, well at least in me.
I recently spent what some have described as a ludicrous amount of money on fresh Chanterelle Mushrooms. Now as far as I was concerned I was not so much buying the mushrooms as the smell and the memories they invoked. Standing around in my mother’s kitchen sautéing the mushrooms for both of us evoked memories of walking through the wood mushroom hunting, dinners with my Opa and my Aunt both of who have sadly passed away.
Nutmeg and cinnamon remind me of Christmas, of snow and watching the snow flakes collecting in little drifts on my bedroom window. The smell of dew covered grass on a cold night reminds me of intimate nights spent outside. The smell of Bottle brushes in bloom and eucalyptus almost brought me to tears when I moved back to Australia, for some reason homesickness hit me hardest after I got home.
I’m sure I was going somewhere with this when I started writing it this morning but work distracted me and I forgot what my point was or is… So there you have it some random observations.
Oh and a reminder drinks Friday night on Chapel St. Meeting at the main entrance to borders at about 5:30pm for no reason other than I need a drink! Come along or don’t.
