I just finished watching Turning Red and I loved it way more than I thought I would. Granted, I didn’t go into it with any expectations, so maybe that helped. But yeah, I thought it was super relatable and enjoyable. :)

Even though I’m not a Canadian born Chinese girl (I’m an American born Cuban/Hispanic girl), I could still really relate to her (and her friends too 😂) in a lot of ways. Mainly because I was also 13 in 2002, I was/am also a momma’s girl and because it’s hard growing up as multicultural when you come from a family of immigrants/refugees.

I could also really relate to Mei’s struggle with wanting to make her mother happy and wanting to be her own person. It’s a struggle that I still deal with even now (and probably always will), so I love that the film addresses generational/cultural differences in families.

I also loved that the movie actually addressed “womanhood” and getting your period in a way that was funny but also genuine and relatable. I honestly can’t think of any movie or show, much less an animated film, to actually address female puberty like this before (another reason why we need more films/shows written + directed by women). The red panda was an excellent metaphor for that, and also for mental health in general, so I really liked it.

Also, I LOVE the music in movie too. 4*Town reminded me so much of the Backstreet Boys and all the other boy-bands that I loved at that age. And of course I squealed with joy when Destiny’s Child started playing, lol. All in all, I think it was a really fun movie.

hi Cris,

Great to hear from you! Glad you got to see it!

It was very enjoyable! I liked it better than Luca, actually. There were a lot of Canadian/Torontonian things, and I enjoyed that. And a lot of 90s things too.

I was actually really impressed that periods were mentioned! Because of course in Disney, fertility isn't really talked about that much. I thought that was cool. :-)
