tumblrI liked this movie. I liked all the references to Toronto in the 90s (the old streetcars, Canadian money before it became rainbow plastic). I liked the references to teens growing up in the 90s - Mei's tamigotchi, CDs, boy bands - "4-Town" instead of O-Town. I liked that the colours of this movie were bright and yet subdued. Made me feel like I was transported into Mei's Toronto.
I remembered what it was like to grow up in the 90s, and it felt nice, thinking about a simpler time.
I liked the depiction of anxiety and emotions, and how it blended in with the concept of cultural assimilation, growing up Canadian-born Chinese, getting good grades in school, and wanting to do "teen things" - like going to a concert. This movie made me think of Brave especially, because in Brave, Queen Elinor (and her triplet sons) turn into bears. And the process of a loved one transforming into an animal and trying to fix the spell/curse helps the mom and daughter to repair the relationship and understand each other better.
But I guess I thought that I would like the movie a lot more.
I did buy
the art book a while ago.
I was thinking of buying
two more books.
It was enchanting. Cotton-candy coloured Toronto in the 90s. It was happy and nostalgic.
Inside Out remains my favourite contemporary Pixar movie that is not a sequel. I also remember really enjoying Onward. I just love Chris Pratt :)
