“She was the only villain to live beside her victim day by day. This brought out interesting relationships, nuances, and a refinement that could not be portrayed with most of our other evil characters. The queen in Snow White watched from her window and was never seen with her stepdaughter. Alone, she was more dramatic than would have been possible in the presence of the girl. There was an aloofness and coldness in this use of privacy; she even used others to carry out her dastardly plans. The stepmother did most of her evil work while Cinderella was watching, which gave the animator the opportunity to show reactions on her young face to the cruelties, the rejection, the snide criticism, the hatred, and the lies. It was an ideal way to show Cinderella’s spunkiness and her sensitivity while achieving the best possible involvement with the audience. Both characters came off as very strong personalities, very understandable, and very memorable. From a theatrical standpoint, they were good for each other.” -Frank Thomas
