A dinner of lamb at the Faraway Lodge. Spofford tells of the modern werewolves his vet buddies have been seeing and his plans to go with Cliff to check it out. Rosie gathers rosehips outside as Pierce gives a little naked-eye astronomy lesson to Val and describes the soul's journey through the spheres. Late that night, Rose sneaks in for a booty call and Pierce seizes her in the dark.
Chapter 16 begins with a description of the cortical homunculus, the nervous system's interior sense of itself (which Kenneth Grant called "the Hidden God".) Pierce takes Rose through a beautiful BDSM scene. He takes a Polaroid of Rose bound, and in its frame decorated with whips and collar it becomes a magical seal, its motto also the title of this section: The Marriage of Agent and Patient. Later he will collar her, and sodomise her, and she will say "I love you."
We see Pierce's elderly landlord next, who reminds him again not to let the pipes freeze. Rose comes over, and tells Pierce she is going to take the Powerhouse course in Conurbana. Pierce gives her the relational psychology test. He also gives her some money found hidden in one of Kraft's books to take with her, unknowingly cementing Rose's certainty that her new cult's magic is real. They promise to still see each other. Pierce thinks of the center of a maze and how to find the way out by keeping to the right hand wall, but his own directional dyslexia means this trick won't help him escape.
