I Hope You Dance

Arica sat on a chair on the backyard patio, watching as the children played in the backyard. The twins were going full throttle, running around the yard and shrieking with delight. Ashley, on the other hand, seemed content to hang back and watch, almost in awe, as her siblings generally caused a fuss.

Ashley babbled something loudly at the two a moment later and they raced over to tickle her and make funny faces, which sent her into a giggle fit as she fell back on the floor.

Arica found herself desperately hoping that her children would never know the horrible realities of this world, hoped that they would never have to face the things she had been forced to…

“Mommy, why are you sad?” a voice asked suddenly, startling her from her thoughts.

“I’m just thinking,” she replied softly, offering a smile of reassurance.

“About sad things?”

“Just thinking about a bad dream. But it’s all fine now.”

“Oh. Okay Mommy.” And off the twins were again.

And things were fine.
