I'm very tired, but it's been a good evening.
Tonight was my first night back in the director's - um, saddle, or whatever - with the Debatable Choir since
lrstrobel stepped down.
Of course we all miss him. (Hi, sweetie! We need to schedule some Laurel-apprentice time real soon. Are you free any of the first full weekend of October?)
But I must admit I'm excited about directing again. I want to bring back some things I used to do last time around, like guest conductors and select groups, and try some new things as well - especially more new music.
Tonight we hammered on a piece we've been doing for a couple of years, and damn if we didn't find that people have been singing some of the parts wrong all this time. It happens, and it's always a head-desk kinda moment. We'll see if the remediation we did tonight sticks, but the piece, a short liturgical Dufay thing, did sound better when we finished. I'm hoping we can use it as a processional at the Agincourt-themed event coming up in a month, since the King and Queen will be holding court. And I'm still looking for the right French piece from the early 1400's to round out all the English and Latin stuff we've already got.
The great thing about directing is that when the choir's singing well and has a positive attitude, I get back from them all the energy I put into directing, in spades. It really makes my day and re-energizes me.
Now if we could only lure in a couple of male tenors. :-)
