This week I have had three Proud Mother occasions with my older son.
1. Tonight he is helping "Uncle Steve" (aka Leifr) build a solar powered furnace. Leifr plans to melt pewter and bronze with the thing; don't ask me how. Right now Kenneth is blissfully (but carefully) playing with power tools on Leifr's front porch. Good thing there's no school tomorrow for Rosh Hashanah.
2. Yesterday the local TV weather man came to the kids' school to do a presentation on weather and science, with help from the Carnegie Science Center. The head of our school actually called me on the phone to tell me that when the weatherman asked the kids what caused weather, Kenneth gave such a thorough answer that the weatherman said "That's amazing" and the kids applauded. Kenneth later told me he chose to truncate his answer a bit, about how the sun heats the earth and causes warm air to rise, creating wind as it pushes cooler air out of the way, because he "didn't want people to think [he] was showing off."
3. Sunday he went to a friend's birthday party at a Pgh Pirates' game, and came home absolutely *beaming* because the packs of baseball cards he gave his friend as a birthday gift included three rare cards his friend had been wishing for. BTW, Kenneth has absolutely no interest in sports himself, his happiness was all for his friend's pleasure.
I have hopes that he will grow up to be a good human being.
I think his Dad would have been pleased, too.
[EDIT: Oh, yeah, and I also like the fact that, at 10, he's still not too cool yet to sit on my lap from time to time. He just got home and seated himself on my knee to tell me all about his adventures with a power drill and a very small circular saw.]
And on a completely different topic, I guess I haven't forgotten everything I learned in that college semester spent studying syllogisms:
You Are Incredibly Logical
Move over Spock - you're the new master of logic You think rationally, clearly, and quickly. A seasoned problem solver, your mind is like a computer!
