I was gonna post earlier...kinda glad I didn't. Because things continued to go downhill from yesterday...
For anyone who doesn't know/remember, I live in northern NJ. We had a helluva storm yesterday - lots of rain and strong winds. Nothing I haven't seen before, though. I was done cleaning, caught up on last week's episode of "Damages," and had literally just taken my laundry out of the dryer (as in, I put in in the laundry basket and was walking back into my apartment) when the power went out. It was a little after 3pm.
And so I waited...I finished my James Rollins book by flashlight in an attempt to kill some time while I waited for the power to come back. (Side note - excellent book. Ice Hunt and Amazonia both are. If you like stories with plausible biological science fiction in them, I urge you to check them out.) Nothing. Time continued to tick. And so, I spent the rest of the night grading papers by candlelight/flashlight. It wasn't so bad, all things considering, but I only have scented candles, and the smell made me nauseous after a while. I also enjoyed some frozen pizza (thank God for gas stoves) and re-set all my non-electrical clocks. When I got tired of grading, it was off to bed, nice and early.
I was awoken around 1:30 by my TV blaring. The electricity was back! I got up, turning everything off, then went back to bed.
When I woke up for reals (around 8), I caught up on computer/internet-related things I had wanted to do yesterday, then headed over to my parents' house for some homemade lasagna. On the way I had to take FIVE detours. First, a major highway was closed...then a relatively large side-road...then two small side roads...then another major road. Really? REALLY?!?!?!?
It was nice to see my parents...they fed me and gave me presents (as an early Easter gift, my mom bought me the
limited edition Swarovski teapot, one of four "Alice in Wonderland" pendants they recently came out with...it's SO PRETTY. The pic doesn't do it justice. And the "circle" hanging directly below the teapot is actually a mini cup and saucer, with crystal "tea" spilling out! Awesome!) And we watched some Star Wars prequels on cable.
When I left, I decided to try the same highway that was closed earlier (as cars were coming towards us from the other direction, I mistakenly thought the other side was open). Nope. The ramp was blocked. So I had to turn around YET AGAIN and drive back another way.
Shortly after I get back to my apartment, I find out that my school is closed tomorrow due to storm damage/power outages. This would be a good thing, except: (a) we don't have any snow days left, so this means they'll add another day to the end of the year and (b) I only JUST caught my "B Day" up with my "A Day" (A Days are periods 1-4, B-Days are periods 5-8) on Friday, after being slightly off due to recent snow days. Tomorrow was "A," but Tuesday will still be "B." Now "B" will be ahead of "A."
Do you see why I'm frustrated?
Anyway...I have parent/teacher conferences on Wednesday, so I'll be at school until 9:30pm. On St. Patrick's Day. Because apparently whoever does the schedule in my school HAS NO SOUL.
To cheer myself up, I give you a depressed whale:
