Stranger in the Old House

Sep 30, 2008 10:29

So last night, after sharon and i had been working on putting boxes away all afternoon, it was time for sharon to go home. mark decided that he wanted a shower, and i had been wanting one but had been too busy to go to the other house earlier than that. So, mark and sharon went to drop me off so i could shower and pick some things up at the old house, while mark went to drop off sharon, so that when he got back it would be his turn in the shower.

Well, no sooner had i got in the door, but i saw a man upstairs. He was older, maybe late 50s or 60s with slightly balding/greying hair, white, a bit taller than me, and not at all professional-looking (he was wearing a denim shirt with a white shirt underneath). also, he looked vaguely like the next door neighbor, but i'm not exactly certain since i had only seen the neighbor a couple of times.

He said "what are you doing here?"
I said "getting my stuff"
"well, i'm here to shut off the gas"
at which point i noticed that the back door was open (it didn't look forced, and it was unlocked)
he came down the stairs and said
"make sure you lock up when you leave"
then he left.

i went and locked the door behind him, and looked around a bit, realized that i had no idea what mark and allen had brought to the new house in terms of the boxes strewn all over (some of them open), also wondering why a service man would be in a locked house at 9 at night with no vehicle
at which point i called mark and told him to come back immediately,

mark dropped sharon off and drove around a bit looking for the guy, then came in and called the landlords to see if they had given the key to anyone, then the police. sharon and i pretty much sat on the steps.
mark checked the furnistat panel, and it didn't work when he tried to set it, so he went downstairs to check things out and the water and furnace were off.

after  a while, the police came and looked around, and pretty much said that the guy was probably looking to steal the copper out of the house. they told us to lock up well when we left, and that they'd keep an eye out.

we got as much of the things that were of worth as we could, mostly sentimental things for me, and more lamps for the new house.

i really don't tihnk i want to go back there ever again.

also, i really wouldn't mind it if my luck would switch directions, maybe just from bad to neutral would be fine. especially since i have to finish up the bathroom today and tomorrow now...
