By now, I'm sure all of you have heard about and been appalled by the news of
Rutgers student Tyler Clementi's suicide.
I did not go to Rutgers myself, but I am from immediately south of the university and immediately north of the high school where the two students who set up the webcam graduated. My first thought after hearing about this, after the initial rage, was, irrationally enough, "dammit central Jersey, what have you done wrong here?"
But I do have one stronger tie to Rutgers. After my semester off at Bryn Mawr, in an attempt to make sure I had enough anthropology credits to graduate on time, I took a Rutgers summer class called "Modern Problems in Anthropology: Health and Human Rights." I didn't expect much; it was just the class that happened to fit my schedule best.
It was the single best anthropology class I ever took, and in the running for best single class ever.
Now, in the aftermath of the aforementioned suicide, I am extremely pleased to note that Rob, my favoritest professor ever, is
leading his classes in protests and
leading campaigns for safe spaces on campus. You go Rob. I am so sorry about the circumstances that led to these actions, but I'm happy you're there, and I couldn't be prouder to be your former student.
