So I bought a new computer. I was pretty psyched about trying a Mac machine this time, but alas, it was not in the cards. More specifically, it was not in my wallet.
That said, it's a really sweet machine for the price I paid. It's got a dual core AMD 2.0 GHz processor and 2GB RAM with a hard drive I can't imagine filling up any time soon. And it's Toshiba, so I am fairly confident it won't die a horrible death like my last two pre-built machines (a Compaq and an HP, respectively). The screen is huge and comes with a pre-installed webcam, even though I already have one of those. It even has a fantastic sound system, one to rival any audio hardware I have ever owned, in or out of a PC. What I'm actually even more thrilled about is that the wireless card is a b/g/n so whenever I can actually front the cash for an N router, I don't have to upgrade my card to match it.
However, it comes presinstalled with Vista. I had heard a lot of things about Vista (few of them good), but I'd never actually given it a stab to see for myself. So far I've been largely impressed. Its smooth and fluid motion and ease of use is something I can really get accustomed to. I know it's essentially a component by component rip-off of OSX Leopard minus a Unix core or Boot Camp (the single most awesome thing Mac has released IMHO), which in and of itself is reminiscent of a weak Compis. But the resemblance is appreciated even if it is practically pirated.
So with all the good words, what's with the title? Within less than a half a day of owning it, I got my first BSOD. Perhaps I'm the sort of user that can bring that upon a machine with enough hardware to run the entire pre-1990's NASA fleet, or perhaps Vista is actually as unstable as the Windows of which I will not speak (I won't say it's name, but I will say it didn't make 'ME' happy). I'm hoping this is the sort of growing pains XP went through, but I also hope it doesn't take another SP 2 incident to make it work properly. I'm almost looking forward to the newest in the 'of death' family, the dreaded RSOD, but only in the same way I look forward to a car accident for the sake of the experience.
So far so, relatively, good.
