The Day I Failed the Turing Test

May 26, 2011 12:39

Firstly, this guy actually failed the Turing Test.

In my defense, I had followed someone on DeviantArt who had a similar handle, so I thought this person might have had a legitimate reason for contacting me. Also there were reasonable time and [Typing...] breaks between statements.

It seemed to be responding to my responses--one from me would lead to the next from it--but it didn't parse my statements at all. It just went through the script. It stopped responding after the last message.

One has to wonder--are there productive uses for controlled-environment computer-generated conversation? Tech support comes to mind, but I have never found an effective one. I have found some that are clearly computers, and some that respond in necessarily-human ways, but that's about it.

At any rate. Perhaps I am just kind of thick today, but I was impressed.

I sort of want to see if I can write a convincing Internet teen and send it forth upon Omegle.

ai, computers
