May 2006

It was the second last day of Alfred's examinations. The final paper would take place next morning, and then he could rest at last. Summer never looked so inviting back in high school. He stepped into the cafe, hugging his books to himself, and scanned the room for his study partners.

"Alfred! Over here," a cheery, heavily-accented voice sounded, and Alfred saw Ivan's tall frame near the windows, waving him over.

Alfred gave a timid smile and hurried over. Ivan, despite his cheerful disposition on the surface, was still quite intimidating. His bulky frame did not help much, and Alfred could never help but wonder if the years Ivan had spent in his home country of Russia as a child had anything to do with his rather odd attitude at times, the least of which being his sweet smile as he talked about other people failing the exams without him and other such horrible fates.

The one good thing about the Russian, however, was that he was a very good (if occasionally harsh) tutor, and thanks to him, Alfred had managed to do quite well for all his previous papers. He was certain he would score As on all of them, even. Not that he did not already score straight As, but the more the better.

"You can buy a drink first, Alfred," Ivan's older sister, Katyusha, asked with a smile.

"Ah, yes... I shall!" Alfred said, trying his best not to stare at Katyusha's large bosom.

He joined the queue, humming to himself as he looked at the menu. When it came to his turn, he took one look at the man in front of him and almost stopped breathing. He could swear he knew those thick eyebrows and emerald green eyes. Could it be...?

"Sir?" the cashier said, frowning, his voice British-accented. "Are you alright? What would you like?"

"Arthur?" Alfred said excitedly, completely forgetting that there were about ten other people queuing behind him and shooting him death glares. "Is this you?"

Arthur - or at least, the man he hoped was Arthur - blinked at him, and looked at him, before a smile spread across his face. "Alfred? My little Alfred?"

Alfred beamed. It was Arthur, after all! "Arthur! I never knew you were here! I've been studying here every day, how come I've never seen you here before? It's been so many years since we last met! Arthur, I've really missed you!"

Arthur chuckled, and leaned in a little, murmuring, "So have I, Alfred, but you'd better place your order first. I'll talk to you later when I'm on your break, alright?" He added in a whisper, "Those people behind you look like they want to kill you for prolonging their caffeine deprivation."

"Okay!" Alfred laughed, and promptly ordered a cappucino, all but skipping off to the side as he waited eagerly.

It really had been many years - he remembered spending the summer in England with his younger brother Matthew. Arthur and his French cousin, Francis, had lived next door and they took care of them whenever their parents were away, being three and five years older, respectively.

Alfred had always liked Arthur better, while Matthew had been so attached to Francis that he still slipped into French every now and then. When he was ten, though, his family sold off their house in England, Francis moved back to France, and Arthur also moved away to Scotland. Thus, the visits had stopped and Alfred never saw Arthur again.

Until now.

He was so lost in thought that he almost did not hear Arthur calling his name, but only almost. He beamed at Arthur as the latter handed him his drink, and on impulse, he leaned forward and kissed Arthur's cheek. Arthur's face immediately turned bright red, but he did not look displeased. Alfred, on the other hand, laughed and skipped back to his seat.

"See ya later, Arthur!"

Comments are very much appreciated ^_^ Thanks for reading :D This will probably end up being rather short, since I have several other fics going on... but we'll see ^.^
