[Chapter 1 - In which Shou and Hiroto meet Cein for the first time][Chapter 2 - In which Cein meets Tora and Saga, too.] Shou watched with no little amusement as Cein jumped onto Hiroto's back nimbly, little fingers swatting at his hair as she demanded attention with every movement. Hiroto looked over at him helplessly, eyes pleading. After they had come home, Shou had had to rush off as Kai had told him that there was a court matter to attend to, regarding some spirits or other. When he returned home, it was to find Cein following Hiroto and plaguing him with questions.
"When will I be older, Papa? I'm already a few hours older, is that old enough?" Cein asked brightly.
Hiroto sighed and shrugged. "No, honey. You'll be old enough in several years."
"But that will be so far away, Papa!" Cein said, her eyes wide and hopeful. "Why can't you tell me what Daddy meant?"
At this point, Hiroto threw a glare in Shou's direction, as if telling him that he would be in trouble for this later. Shou just shrugged and smiled at him, trying his best not to laugh out loud. Cein, however, seemed to get the idea that asking Shou would yield better results, and she promptly jumped down and ran to Shou, clinging onto his leg (since she was not tall enough to jump onto his lap, even when he was sitting). She posed the same question, and Shou picked her up, settling her on his lap.
"Hm... how should I describe it?" Shou said, and Cein immediately perked up, though Hiroto gave him a warning look from across the room.
"You'll be telling me?" Cein beamed.
Shou smiled and patted her head. "Well... you see, they were doing a form of exercise. Very tiring, it is. Nothing for children. You'll learn when you're much older, if you wish. You have got to be older than eighteen... well, I think so, at least, that's the rule for incubi like myself..." he said, trailing off.
Cein made a face. "Exercise? Gross. That doesn't sound much fun."
Hiroto looked greatly surprised, while Shou smiled more widely and patted his dear daughter's head. "Say, Cein, isn't it time for bed? You should be asleep, it will be dawn in several hours."
"Okay, Daddy!" Cein giggled, and leapt off Shou's lap, running to Hiroto and asking to be tucked into bed.
Shou rose and went to his room, stretching out on the bed. It was several minutes later when Hiroto came into the room and straddled him. Shou opened his eyes, smirking as he saw Hiroto pouting adorably at him.
"I can't believe you handled her questions so easily! If you could have done it earlier, then I wouldn't have had to sound so... so lame!" Hiroto groaned, lightly slapping Shou's chest.
Shou laughed softly. "It was quite fun, you know. Although, of course, it might have been easier if she had succubus blood - we instinctively know these things..." he mused.
Hiroto sighed and hit Shou's chest once more. "Well, at least I know she takes after you in one thing... always sure to get what she wants."
"And she takes after you in another. Perfectly playful and childish, no?" Shou retorted sweetly, quite relishing the angered flush that rose up Hiroto's cheek.
"I am not a child, Shou. Shut up now," Hiroto snapped.
Shou chuckled and lifted a hand to stroke Hiroto's cheek. "My little spitfire, would you like to show me, then? How you are, firstly, no child, and secondly, how I ought to shut up," he murmured, licking his lips.
Hiroto's lips parted in surprise, his eyes widening considerably. There was no cause for surprise this time, Shou thought, or perhaps Hiroto had been too caught up in trying to take care of their daughter. To his surprise, then, Hiroto rolled off him, simply lying next to him.
"Not tonight, Shou," Hiroto said firmly, looking away.
Shou straddled Hiroto this time around, and said with a frown, "Why not?"
Hiroto looked up, and he looked somewhat upset. "I'm tired, Shou. Taking care of Cein is pretty hard work, and I don't feel like having any distractions. Hell, I'm the one doing most of the work!"
Shou tensed up, and said coolly, "So I'm a distraction to you, Hiroto? You think I don't care?"
"I didn't mean that, Shou," Hiroto murmured, blinking quickly, eyes over-bright.
Shou got off him, and continued ruthlessly, "You know. Hiroto, it's not that I don't care. Cein's my daughter as much as she is yours, and I'd gladly share the workload if not for, you know, me being a prince and having court matters to attend to. Of course, if you can't see that, then I don't have anything much to say, really. I just wanted to help you relieve some of your stress, but fine by me if you don't want to, I guess."
He stopped only when he saw the first tear roll down Hiroto's cheek, fear and sorrow clearly etched on his face. Shou felt a pang of guilt for hurting Hiroto like this. Hiroto simply stared at him, looking unsure of what to say, and Shou took his lover into his arms at once. Hiroto said nothing, simply burying his face into Shou's chest, and Shou held him tightly, not caring if his arms ached from the rather uncomfortable position they were in.
"I'm sorry," Hiroto murmured at last. "I guess I should try to relax..."
Shou kissed Hiroto's forehead and whispered, "It's okay. I should be the one saying sorry, I really shouldn't have said all that. I should try to loosen up, too."
Shou thought he could feel Hiroto smile against his chest, his body trembling slightly. He could feel the heat and wetness of Hiroto's tears somewhere near his neck, and again felt remorse. He had to admit, Hiroto had a hard time at home, too, he supposed, trying to take care of their all-too-hyperactive daughter, and sometimes keeping the servants in check when he wasn't around, since they had practically accepted him as Shou's consort and obeyed him as they did Shou.
It was not long before Shou realised that Hiroto had fallen asleep, his body still save for the steady rise and fall of his chest and his heartbeat. Shou quite enjoyed feeling Hiroto's heartbeat against his skin, even if he did not exactly have one of his own. It made him feel better, just being with Hiroto.
"You weren't kidding when you said you were tired, huh?" Shou whispered, gently laying his lover down in a more comfortable position.
Hiroto did not wake up, and Shou smiled at his peaceful countenance, gently brushing away a few stray strands of hair from his face. The sound of light footsteps made him tense up and look around, when he saw his daughter at the doorway, looking hesitant.
"Cein?" Shou said, standing up and walking over to her, picking her up. "What's wrong, sweetie? You can't sleep?"
Cein nodded, biting her lip. "I'm not really used to sleeping all alone, Daddy. Back in the clan house, I used to sleep in the same room as another three of my friends..."
Shou kissed her cheek gently. "That's alright. Do you want to sleep with us tonight, then?" he suggested, and smiled at the way Cein beamed at him.
Shou carried her over to their bed and tucked her in next to Hiroto. Hiroto seemed to register this as he opened his eyes blearily, blinking at Cein and Shou. Hiroto smiled tiredly and patted Cein's hair, before closing his eyes again. Shou watched them, feeling warm inside - feeling love for his family. He climbed into the bed next to them, and draped an arm over them protectively.
"Daddy? Are we going to see my brothers tomorrow?" Cein asked shyly.
"Yes, honey. Go to sleep now, okay?" Shou replied. "Sleep well."
"Yes, Daddy!"
