The Crystal Skull is silly pulpy fun!

Last night Tigs and I watched the new Indiana Jones movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And by new, I mean it came out two and a half years ago.

Spoilers

Ok, so going into this movie I knew only a couple of things. Indy survives an atomic blast in a fridge. Aliens. Crystal Skull. To be honest, that really tells you everything you need to know going into it.

Like my title says, it is silly pulpy fun. It’s more over the top than previous installments, but I’m not entirely sure how much of that is because of the advances in special effects.

Setting it during the late 1950’s worked really well, though it felt a little odd having communist bad guys, rather than Nazi bad guys.

It was in a lot of ways rather formulaic. It was never a surprise when the bad guys were going to show up again. That's a problem when telling this sort of story. It has a certain pace, ups and downs that keep the story moving. Certain elements were really predictable though.

Of everything in it though, there was only one thing that I really didn’t care for: Shea LaBeouf swinging like a monkey through the Amazon. It just didn’t do it for me. Also, the lack of a gag reel in the special features was a sad note.

End Spoilers

Next up from Netflix are the second and third Librarian movies with Noah Wyle, to be followed by National Treasure Book of Secrets. I don’t know why, but I’m in a really 50-60’s style pulp mood.
