finished the pencil rendering of Ankarana. it's visible here:
http://www.confoundedcontraption.com/illustration/113b_pencil.tif Got a Common Tenrec behind an uncarina in the foreground, a highly cryptic Leaf Gecko on a Pachypodium decaryii on the left, some Phromnia rosea nymphs in the upper right, an aye-aye in the tree in back, a fossa in the back on the right, a couple more tenrec nosing a sphaerotherium in the center, some fruit bats... a bunch more pachypodia... a couple amorphophalli, how could i leave those out?... some baobabs, a delonix regia and some Traveler's trees on the left... a ficus, some ramy and kapok on the right... some lianas... an aloe on the cliff... the spider in the upper left is a Gasteracantha versicolor formosa, which lives in the Eastern rainforests, but is said to be similar to G. sanguiolenta andrefanae, which is endemic to the western dry forests and of which i could not find a picture. I hate to think that I'm misinforming you about the species inhabiting Madagascar's dry deciduous north-west forests... the rest are legit, as far as i know.
a girl in my class: that place looks evil!
me: ?
girl: ...well, you've got bats *and* a spider!
i guess i should have done Bunnytopia if didn't want people to think it was an evil landscape. she didn't even mention the squiddy bugs. the squiddiness on the Phromia rosea nymphs (you know, the squiddy bugs on the branch in the upper right, their tentacles) is actually waxy stuff that apparently tastes bad to predators. adults don't have it. it's a good thing the nymphs do, if they're going to be hanging out that close to a gecko.
We played a show yesterday in SF, and today at Barefoot. the barefoot show was completely last minute, as a band canceled due to laryngitis, or elephantiasis, or something, and the other act (awesome
http://www.myspace.com/doesntrhymegood) told me today he'd like us to share the bill. my Crippling Malaise ended practice early, but the only people at the show were employees, ex-employees, and Travis, so we did songs we haven't practiced, and that was fun. i'm bored with all the songs i've written except for Kelsey and Ghost. we did a bunch of covers and folk songs. Did Motherless Child for the first time in 1.5 years, sort of a free blues version. i'm practicing 3 mallets.
the weather has turned beautiful. the first signs of summer in san jose always fill me with hope for the future.
