Selling chametz online is silly, but I think it's the symbol of it anyway. The fact that you don't own the chametz that's in your house means that you can't eat it - so the reason to sell it isn't to make other people happy, it's to protect you from caving in and eating the loaf of bread you know you've got hiding in the basement. You can't eat it because it isn't yours! (When I was at Ilan's parents' house for Pesach last year, his dad had a scotch the night before and they were like... YOU ARE DRINKING MARSHALL'S SCOTCH!!! because they had actually sold it haha)
I'm going to sell my chametz on Tuesday right before I leave for Maryland, so I won't feel bad about eating other people's food. This will be the first year I've sold my chametz - I did feel a little pressure from the post about the cat food thing, but I have spoken to rabbis and they have said that feeding animals is not the same as deriving benefit (what do people feed horses and the like during Passover?).
