6 degrees of kevin bacon?
i think you all know about this, it's a parlor game where players challenge each other to arbitrarily choose an actor and then connect them to another actor via a film that both actors have appeared in together, repeating this process to try and find the shortest path that ultimately leads to prolific actor kevin bacon. it rests on the assumption that anyone involved in the hollywood film industry can be linked through their film roles to bacon within six steps.
well, not long ago i realized that me (& my brother) could possibly be connected to bacon too. it's through the movie gettysburg (1993). 2 of the neighbor's sons had a civil war reenactor phase & were extras in the movie (confederate solders). ted turner (who had an uncredited role) let them use his cell phone to call their mother. keep in mind this was '92 or '93, almost no one had a cell phone. mostly just rich people, like turner. so they were the first ones we knew that had even seen a cell phone in real life, much less used one.
and since we've met them, we're one step closer to bacon, not like "we know a guy whose sons were in this movie." kind of thing.
however, knowing this does not make me want to figure out exactly how we could be 6 (or fewer) degrees away from kevin bacon. just knowing that there's a possibility of it is interesting enough.
