the second assistant by mimi hare and clare naylor

in short; if you liked the nanny diaries, you'll like this book.
like the nanny diaries this is a fictionalized look at the world of movie agents told from the first person. a world of crazy agents, spoiled stars & sleazy producers.

BTW the character of scott wagner is described as having wild hair, and for that reason alone i think in the movie he should be played by joe flanigan.

WARNING! this book contains a lot of adult language. if you don't like that sort of thing, this is not the book for you.

spoiler-ish stuff ahead;

the main character of elizabeth isn't completely naive having worked with politicians in washington d.c. for a few years. it's when the congressman that she works for gets convicted for corruption or somenthing that she goes to los angeles to try for a job at the agency after remembering that  the head of head of it gave her his card at a party.
once there she lands a job as the second assistant to scott wagner, an up & coming super-agent. but of course it's not as glamorous as she had hoped. the head of the agency is very obsessive compulsive; only wants white thumbtack & all cans of diet coke must have their labels face outward in the fridge. scott is a drug-using, adulterer with ADD. the first assistant, how takes elizabeth under her wing, keeps him in line. barely. his wife sees a divorce on the way & is gathering art & jewlery with good resale value.
there are glimpses of big names; cameron, jen, george, harvey & steven. and a few lesser (no doubt made-up) ones; jennifer, tony & emmanuelle. there's the culture that you'd expect; the ivy, rodeo drive & the sundance film festival.
an interesting read, IMHO. i look forward to reading the sequel.

about the language; i understand that's the way some people talk, but having the F-word 10 times a chapter is a bit much. plus; a-hole, that C-word that rhymes with runt & the one that rhymes with rock.
