Today's report from the land of non-productivity:
My student loan was finally deposited yesterday, so I celebrated by buying a new bookshelf at Ikea! I was in desperate need of one, as I have somehow accumulated far more books (both for school and pleasure) than my little 3 shelf bookcase would hold. I brought some classics-related books from home out with me when I came back from Christmas, and then my mom sent me a bunch of her statistics books from grad school when I was having a bit of trouble in my archaeological stats class and then there are all the requisite lexicons and grammar references I've acquired over the years, plus the shameful number of novels I've ordered used on amazon this year. Just because something costs only $2 doesn't mean you need to buy it, Katherine.
But we are in the middle of a heat wave, and for some reason the ac and vent in my car work only intermittently....as in, like, 1/3 times I turn on the car. It's very strange. So I had to drive to Sacramento with the windows down (bad for fuel efficiency!) and it was scorching outside! I had NPR blasting so that I could hear it over the rushing wind. Ikea was interesting. I had to wander through the whole store even though I wanted just one measly bookcase. I ended up finding some super cheap picture frames too, so maybe I can finally put something on my plain depressing walls. I'll have to ask if I am allowed to put holes in them. The bookcase was super heavy but I felt strange about asking for help, so I just did it myself. I had to figure out how to do the fancy thing where part of my backseat folds down in order to fit it in the trunk, and then I just kind of leveraged it in, with much strain and sweat. I think I nearly ripped off the seal part of the trunk, but oh well. I knew there was no way I could get it inside without help, so I the box apart in the trunk and carried it in piece by piece. Horrah for self-sufficiency....although I really think I need some more friends out here for situations like these. I rearranged the room and I love it now. Bookshelves (plural) make it look so cozy. And I am going to frame those prints I bought for 25 cents at the antique store across from the world's largest ball of twine, of equestrians over 15th cent. manuscript pages. It shall be awesome. It shall. All I need now is a big comfy chair in which to do my homework and the room will be complete.
I went to the Nugget Market this morning for a few groceries and bought some unnecessary things as well....such as a bottle of pop called "Leninade." I couldn't resist. It was red and the label says "Get hammered and sickled." The novelty of consumerized communism was too much for me to resist! It also tasted pretty good. I got another pineapple flavored one from Hawaii and some vegetable sushi rolls. All much more reasonably priced than I had anticipated. I am giddy with having more than $50 in my checking account.
A few weeks ago, I found $12 on the street and I told John that it increased my net worth by 10%. He still laughs about that, but it was true for real. If I close my eyes to the fact that I have to start paying back this loan immediately, it really makes me feel much less panicked about my situation.
