So, for those of you who are intending to move to the fine land of the clouded sun that is the Pacific Northwest, here's some things you may find helpful.
1) Buy thermal underwear. Yes really. Fuck jackets, you just look like a sillyperson wearing that stuff if it's not cold enough out. Yeah, sure, if it drops below 40, grab your jacket. Otherwise, just put another layer of normal clothing on. I wore my thermal leggings basicly nonstop from november through feburary, and intend to through most if not all of march, barring more of this silly sunshine becoming the norm.
2) There are very blurred lines between hippies, rednecks, and geeks around here. It's easy to be all three at once. What may appear to be a 'redneck' most likely recycles, and is handy with at least one major craft enough to be called a geek in it. Free from the fetters of the opressive Santa Cruz redneck hate machine, I have found myself quite enjoying cooking biscuts and gravey, and drinking from old mason jars. I think it's a verifyable fact that I was already a geek and a hippy before moving here.
3) Also, unbrellas are not the mark of a newbie, but they are just damn inconvienent for standard rain around here. If it's not raining at soaking intensity outside, grab a hat, it'll save you a lot of time.
4) Flannel pajama bottoms for around the house. Jen convinced me to buy a pair after I saw some with sock monkeys on them. I am currently wearing a pair with penguins on them. It gets cold in winter, and these are far more comfey for around the house clothes than most other stuff. When it's really cold, combine with thermals. Saves on the electric bill.
Anyway, that's about it on advice for those moving. And, since I only got a response back from James and my lovely wife about the Iron Kingdom's D20 game, not sure if anyone else is interested. Bueller?
