My Mother Once (IV)
My mother once took me away to school. I packed up all I'd need, and together we loaded up our cars. One after the other we drove across the Midwest. Together, we unloaded the cars and climbed the stairs at our journey's end. Side by side we took a turn around the campus. When she met my roommate she smiled and said how well she thought we'd get along. I prepared to start a new chapter of my life, and imagined we were finding another new beginning, together.
As she turned to leave her final words were, "Don't screw up."
