Okay, on the brighter side - college maintenance, nudged along by Richard, found my packrat middens. That is a Very Good Thing. If those had been truly lost I would have been sad. Now I have something to play with after I finish processing all 200+ bags of dirt.
For those who might want to know, packrat middens are big ole plies of plants and stuff, cemented together by, well, packrat urine. Hey, some of these things are tens of thousands of years old. You can learn a lot about past environments from them.
