After my
little snit about overdone themes in fic, I read a cute McShep story that made me realize something - novelty isn't that important in fanfic. Of course it's great to be the first to think of some awesome new theme, but that only gets you the cachet of being first. Someone could still come along and write 'your' theme better. And of course there's nothing truly new under the sun. If you can imagine it, someone's most likely already done it, maybe not in your fandom, but still.
But even if your theme is not particularly original, there's something undeniably satisfying about a familiar theme well done. Call it the comfort food theory of fanfic. The 80-millionth McShep 'aliens made them do it' story is still fun to read. At least for me.
