Arashi・Sakurai Sho, instructor role at the 30 year old milestone "I felt a connection" deeply moved
Oricon 3/27 (Tuesday) 12:23

Popular group Arashi's Sakurai Sho attended the production interview of 3 night special drama "Blackboard ~Instructors who fought with the era~" on the 27th on a special stage in Tokyo, front of TBS. Sakurai, who plays the lead role as Shirahama Shohei, a teacher who lived right on the verge of war until right after it, said with deep emotion, "The first drama series I was in was 'Tengoku ni Ichiban Chikai Otoko Kyoushi Hen (Man Closest to Heaven Teacher Series)' (2001, TBS), and I played the role of a student. I felt a connection/fate to be acting as an instructor who stands by the podium (as opposed to a student who sits in a desk) at this 30 year old milestone."

At the interview, there was even a surprise where Suzuki Fuku, who plays the role of Shohei's nephew, Shirahama Takashi, appeared as the bouquet presenter. Fuku-kun gave his thoughts, "There were many times when I had to call Sakurai-kun as 'ojisan' during the filming and I thought it was weird, but it was funny." Sakurai added on, "He is my nephew of pride (a nephew I can brag about)" and smiled.

The production will air for 3 nights, each focusing on a different era-- right on the verge of war until post war; post high economic growth; and the present, post earthquake and tsunami disasters. Through the form of three "problem instructors" who lived through a milestone of reformation in Japan, the drama explores what education is, what being Japanese means, and what the hope of humans are.

The mid-war and post-war era of the first night was filmed with a set worth about 100,000,000 yen. Sakurai expressed his thoughts on the production by explaining,  "I was hoping to be able to play a role in a drama or movie that places myself in that certain era someday. During the filming, I was able to feel a sense of fulfillment and I also felt lots of messages. I will be satisfied if even any small part of that will take shape in the drama."

The second night takes place in 1980. Sato Koichi plays the role of Goto Akira, a student of Shohei and now a teacher at a middle school that involves school violence. The third night's content is corruption in the school classrooms, where Matsushita Nao plays the role of Takizawa Momoko, a middle school teacher in the present time, who gets trampled by monster parents. Sato appealed, "It is a production in which you can have a vicarious experience on how education has been shifting and shaking, and in which you can question to yourself and others by reflecting upon it." Matsushita said in the middle of filming, "There are not many scenes where we show our smiles our laughter, but the site is fun. I hope you can feel the importance of having a dream and the importance of life itself."
