One reason I got sucked into watching anime was because the narrative conventions are so different from Western ones. Today, I was watching Toshokan Sensou (which is begging for a post in and of itself) and reading Special A, and pondering relationship differences. Let me elaborate on some of them ( Read more... )

Hmm, from what I've experienced I'd want someone who kinda compliments me (for example, someone who's outgoing, since if they're shy then we'd sit in silence all day), but maybe that's just me...

Having someone compliment you doesn't mean it has to be total opposites though.

I read somewhere that liking someone who's alike to you is where you look for someone who looks like your parents, or who reminds you of your parents.
Another one is someone who has similar interests as you - likes the same things, etc.

Sure, I think avoiding extremes in anything is good. :)

Probably things like world view, interests/hobbies, culture (in a broad sense) are what people look for that are similar to them. It makes sense. In anime/manga though, their personality, ways of dealing with situations, etc. are all the same. :/

Another unwritten law in anime or manga is that if two characters constantly fight or argue with each other, they will end up as a pairing. There is no deviation from this law. Every character must obey it.

*grins* It is hilarious how this always seems to happen. Especially since I tend to ship people who aren't constantly fighting... so the couples I like never become canon. XD

Ah, it's alright. XD Let's see... off the top of my head, Mori/Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club, MomoRyo from the Prince of Tennis, Yuu/Shin from Holyland, Gilbert/Oz from Pandora Hearts, Rock Lee/Hinata from Naruto. And GokuTsuna from Reborn, but that doesn't really count because of how popular they are. XD *Shot*
