One reason I got sucked into watching anime was because the narrative conventions are so different from Western ones. Today, I was watching Toshokan Sensou (which is begging for a post in and of itself) and reading Special A, and pondering relationship differences. Let me elaborate on some of them

I read somewhere that liking someone who's alike to you is where you look for someone who looks like your parents, or who reminds you of your parents.
Another one is someone who has similar interests as you - likes the same things, etc.

Probably things like world view, interests/hobbies, culture (in a broad sense) are what people look for that are similar to them. It makes sense. In anime/manga though, their personality, ways of dealing with situations, etc. are all the same. :/

Eh, that's why I can't stand some stereotypical manga... (and that covers most of the shoujo manga genre. OTL).
