Anti-Japanese violence in China as Chinese ships violate Japanese territorial waters

The Japanese government’s decision to purchase several of the Senkaku islands from the Japanese citizen that owns them has sparked a new round of violent anti-Japanese riots in China. This TV news report states that there have been protests in about 40 different parts of China:

Photos on blogs show smashed Japanese cars and vandalized Japanese businesses. Japanese citizens have also been attacked.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government is stepping up its aggressive behavior near the Senkakus. Six Chinese patrol ships violated Japanese territorial waters:

China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday that its ships were in the vicinity of the islands, saying in a statement that:

“These law enforcement and patrol activities are aimed to demonstrate China’s jurisdiction over the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets and ensure the country’s maritime interests.”

A few hours after receiving warnings from Japanese coast guard vessels, the Chinese patrol boats left.
