I also thought Carey Mulligan was miscast, but that kiss in the elevator? Hotter than burning. You can't deny the two of them had stellar chemistry. Then again, Ryan Gosling could probably have chemistry with a paper bag, my lord that man is fine.
I LOVED the homage to 80's movies and film noir. The lighting and the cinematography - so. fucking. pretty. They way it was shot was simply brilliant, and with all of those close ups in the car, it would have been so easy for the actors to totally lose themselves, but they didn't. Ryan's performance especially was no nuanced, I was in awe. And I really appreciated that so much of the movie was silent. It made all the times the actors did talk all the more enthralling.
