I saw this about a month ago (twice within a week no less) and yet somehow spectacularly failed on posting because, well, this is me.
So as I said, the first time I went to see The Social Network, I saw it seated between
ems and
sophieisgod; the second, I dragged S to Staines with me. I have a feeling that perhaps why I had such an initially positive reaction was down to being between two fangirls who clutched at me in preparation for the best parts. But you guys. You guys. Obviously I am all about Mark/Eduardo - something I'll get to in a second, but just generally? I loved this cast and I loved the characters. Despite it being a predominantly white sausage fest - because it really was, there is no escaping this fact - I did enjoy it. The Winklevii were hysterical and Armie Hammer did a great job of making them very distinct personalities. Justin Timbalone was not as hideous as I had been expecting which threw me somewhat, I cannot lie. Also, got to say that Joe Mazello was great as Dustin - the second time around, I loved watching him make his reaction faces and just always bringing something to the scene. Brilliant.
And then we have Mark and his sweet looking Brazilian Eduardo. Jesse was something of a marvel, the way he kept himself very contained both physically and emotionally, making it all about the eyes! and hands! And Andrew. I've been a champion of this boy since way back when, but it especially kicked off with Red Riding (words cannot express the love I have for '1974' and '1980' okay?). But he was just so amazing to watch. I think Emma, Sophie and S can all vouch for the many times I flailed, clutched at my heart and generally said "look at his faaaaace". Obviously for me this became the Boyfriends Network because he needs him! he's there for him! Mark wears his fleece and Eduardo is the jilted girlfriend - these are all things I wholeheartedly support. But whether or not you're into that, Jesse and Andrew had amazing chemistry and were fabulous at showing the dissolution of that friendship.
But let's get down to some under-appreciated characters here aka my favourites: Divya Narendra and Erica Albright. Let's not even discuss the fact that I have about a million fic idea, many of which involve them hooking up and being awesome. But my god. Even though they arguably got very very little screen time (THIS IS A FAILING SORKIN. C'MON.), I think they really added something to the movie and especially to my experience of the movie. Erica, who sees through the bullshit and gets out when she can, who won't take anymore of Mark's shit and who won't back down about it either? Girl after my own heart. She's a champ. And Divya. I love his righteous rage - I thought Max Minghella was not only a stunning human to look at, but also so utterly convincing. But really. I loved Divya. Tripping over cables, nearly running away with his girlfriend's laptop; furious and confrontational. Just brilliant. Also, I thought Brenda Song was amazing, even with her terribly written character.
Obviously props for direction and scripts go unsaid (though Sorkin, the internet is not written in ink. It's code. Just saying.) So let's talk about that masterpiece of a score. I love film scores, am a total nerd for them and can be made to love a movie by virtue of its score. And this was no different. I loved the electronic nature of it, I love the recurrent themes - particularly Mark's - and that version of 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' was fab. This movie just really came together as a whole, which was something I really did not expect for a movie about Facebook. I mean, really.
I think that's it? I'd go into more detail but then I really would be here for hours and that's what the comments are for anyway.
