Laura tugged the man's arm with all her strength but only succeeded in falling over. She pushed her curls back and looked around frantically.
As though reading her mind, he gasped, "Shovel. There."
From beside the door, she snatched up the implement and attacked the snow enclosing his chest and pinned arm.
"Careful," he warned. "It'll come over on you."
She didn't care. She hacked at the bank, but could make little headway with the wide blade. Tossing it aside, she dashed back inside. By the woodstove was a metal shovel for ashes.
"That works," the man said approvingly as she began to clear around his torso. "My feet and legs are in an air pocket. If you can get--"
He watched the massive wall of snow hovering above them. She couldn't. With his one free arm, he tossed aside chunks of ice.
She was aware of hot sweat, melting snow filling her hair, her rasping breath matching his. Her limbs because to quake, but she had to ignore everything. "Were you alone?" He had the tough look of one of Richard's security detail.
"Yep. Snowshoeing. Backcountry." He knew to conserve his strength, unlike her.
She finally managed to release his arm and now he could reach for the door's knob. "I think I can..." he puffed, "Pull myself..."
She tore at the snow. Chunks rained down from the looming cliff. The man began to slide free by agonizing inches. Reaching in, she found his belt with her numb fingers and pulled.
With a sickening groan...from them...from the bank...he tumbled out. Scrambling and panting, they rolled together through the open doorway. On her knees, Laura grabbed the knob and yanked the door shut just as the snow gave way. It thumped against the door, sealing them inside.
