“The child is alive.”

Laura followed Bill to the head. She stood in the doorway and watched as he shaved. She knew it had been wise to keep it from him. Emotion and liquor too often clouded his judgement; and in the beginning, his relationship with Sharon was too close.

These were all valid points to explain what she’d done. She had them sorted in her head, knowing this day would come.

“No one should have to live with that,” he said.

Her mind immediately went back to that day.

They had pulled her from the fountain. The baby had survived.

It was a sliver of hope; but it was all she had.

Laura sat and touched the tiny hand, watching her in the glass case. When it was evident that her niece was too injured to survive, the doctor let Laura hold her. It was a three day reprieve from the agony she was living.

The little angel left her as the rest of her family had.

She was alone.

Laura almost said, I know, but the words stuck in her throat as they always did. She held them in and let Bill talk.

She bought the caskets, including a small white one for her niece. She was buried beside her mother, her aunt, her grandfather and her grandmother. Laura wished every day there was a place for her too.

But day by day she survived.

All she’d been through had made her capable. It gave her a strange sense of right. Not even Bill could change that.

“If it were my child, there would be nothing or anyone that could stop me,” Bill said.

Sometimes that isn’t enough.

Bill walked away.

“I do understand,” Laura whispered when she knew he couldn’t hear her. “But I’d do it again.”
