“You might enter into the spirit of this a little more, Bill,” Laura complained. “It’s only once a year.”

Bill grunted unenthusiastically.

“And don’t tell me that lying, cheating, cowardly little bastard doesn’t deserve it.”

He followed her scathing gaze to the crude dwelling beneath them where Gaius Baltar lay sprawled on the makeshift bed with his brunette lover. Across the valley Caprica waited for her husband to return from his ‘trading trip‘, tending their crops and their two pretty little daughters with fierce devotion.

“You win,” Bill sighed. “Let’s get on with it.”

“Do you have everything?”

Bill lifted the length of chain as though it were weightless but it clinked and rattled with satisfying solidity. In his other hand he held a white sheet which wafted delicately in the non-existent breeze.

Laura grinned. “Let me hear the laugh.”

Bill’s shoulders sagged. “This is so undignified,” he muttered, relenting nevertheless in the face of Laura’s firm gaze and giving a loud, hollow laugh.

“That gives me chills,” Laura giggled. “It’s going to scare the living daylights out of that conniving little weasel.”

Bill tried not to look pleased by this praise. “And you can mimic Caprica’s voice?” he asked, doubt and a shamefully prurient fascination colouring his tone.

Laura regarded him calmly then licked her lips slowly and leaned close.

“Oh yes, Bill. I can definitely do that,” she murmured seductively, in perfect imitation of the blond Cylon.

Bill gawped, finally beginning to hedge an apology when he registered Laura’s raised eyebrow, only for her to roll her eyes and laugh.

He snorted wry amusement and smiled. “Let’s get this over with and go home.”

Three minutes later they were walking hand in hand beside a crystal clear lake while a naked, screaming Gaius Baltar ran home in terror.
