Something was off. Harry could feel it as soon as he Apparated to the front of the house. There was a strange energy in the air, and for a moment he was sure that Draco had been attacked by Death Eaters before reality set in and he realized that threat had passed. Of course this only made him more confused.
He stepped up to the front door, listening intently for anything out of place, anything to explain the strange feeling he was having. As if something or someone was waiting for him. He pulled his wand out and then opened the door, poised to cast if need be.
Instead of hexes he was met with a chorus of cheers. “Happy Birthday Harry!” Harry jumped, more shocked than if there had been actual dark wizards behind the door. After a long, stressful week he had forgotten about his birthday. It seemed that his house mate had not, as the cheer, banner and large group of friends could attest to.
Draco had also seemed to forget that Harry hadn't wanted a party. He choked out a muffled “Wow,” as his friends cheered him on, jumping and clapping in excitement as Harry caught Draco's eye and glared at him. All Draco had for him in response was a falsely innocent smile.
“I thought we'd talked about this,” Harry whispered to Draco after greeting all their friends.
“Honestly Harry, you didn't really believe that your 30th would go by without something big? Your friends insisted we do something. You're lucky I toned them down...you won't believe what they had planned for you.”
Harry was surprised by the amusement and sincerity in Draco's voice. He was also a little horrified...if Draco, of all people had toned it down, then it must have been bad. Before he could speculate further, Luna took his hand and tugged him away from Draco toward the centre of the room.
“It's time to open your presents now Harry,” Luna said. “Mine first.”
He shot Draco a pleading look but took the small, prettily wrapped box with a smile.
“Thanks Luna, all of you, this is really...great.” He gave the room at large a grin before pulling apart the paper to reveal a small lidded box. He took the top off and was immediately surrounded by balloons...dozens of red balloons filling the air around him, bouncing off his body on their way to bob lightly on the floor. Harry blinked a few times in confusion. Draco was arching a brow at him and smiling wickedly while Luna babbled on about clubs and balloons and remembering how much Harry had liked that song. He laughed when she did, thanked her and pulled Draco aside as soon as her attention was diverted by the balloons.
“What song?” he asked, still confused.
“I have no idea,” Draco responded with a laugh. “But you should have seen what she was going to put in the box.”
