Hrm. Only three pages and even though that's a whole scene, I'm a little disappointed. Because I was gearing up to get into the next scene, whatever it is, but the Aunt came home. And I immediately got distracted.
Eleanor still isn't engaging with Arushka the way I'd like her to. This time it's because the issues with Carley came in the way. Which I followed for the dramatic and social potential and I don't mind that. But I know the problem between her and Arushka has been resolved, we just haven't seen it on the page yet. Maybe in the next scene. I did forget that I had to write the rest of that first day of them together. So we'll see. Tomorrow they'll be alone, just her and Arushka, so they'll have a chance to engage on these remedied terms.
Hopefully.
When I finish this whole phase of the novel, I'm going to have to go right back to where La Gwynne were introduced and read through the whole thing with an eye to characterisation. Cos I find I only get to know these people when Arushka gets to know them. So the way they behave when she first meets them isn't necessarily consistent with the way they're behaving when she studies with them. And that's really growing as a concern in the back of my head. I mean, it may be consistent. I'm just not sure, that's all. But I can't do anything about it now. Need to move forward and try and differentiate them all enough to be interesting and real as much as I can now. The rest can be fixed and tweaked later.
Oh! I forgot to say! I got my Change of Name Certificate! And it even arrived at Annandale within the three week period the lady at the Registry promised. Awesomeness. As I said on Facebook, I am now officially hyphenated! Yay! Pity I can't move on the other stuff until I get back to Sydney. But no worries. Focus on the novel now when you can.
God, it is so great to be able to get up and just go straight into the novel without having to worry about money or feeding myself or work tomorrow. I even had soy milk today. Cos the Aunt has these awesome dark chocolate wheat flakes and she's one of those insane people who doesn't actually need to drink soy milk but does because she likes the taste. Cold. I have been told to inform you that she likes it cold. In her protein shake. To which she adds LSA --- not LSD --- lecithin and psyillium husk. *rolls eyes most supremely* This is the point I mutter under my breath "Gym bunny."
Actually the soy milk wasn't too bad at all cos the wheat flakes were chocolatey enough that it was all like a pretty watery chocolate milkshake which is fine cos I don't like the taste of real milk, anyway. *is blathering on*
I watched the very first Martin and Lewis film on YouTube last night, My Friend Irma. Omigod they are so young and Jerry really does look like a kid. Kinda scary to think that kid actually had a kid at that point. And his hair is a little longer and so cute and even though they're not onscreen for a good deal of the time, my god they're just electrifying when they are. The speed and chemistry between them. Fantastic. And Dean sings so yummily. And Jer hasn't quite figured out his dumber-than-you-more-naive-than-you persona yet so he's really quite cynical and abrasive which is a kind of joy for me to see.
I rather liked the whole cynicism and slight amorality of the film, actually. For what I now know of the Fifties, it seemed quite authentic and therefore thrilling. Not so much with the Hollywood glamour I grew up with. George Marshall as director. I know I've seen other stuff by him, just can't think of any titles.
We finished first season of Magnumpi. *sad* And I've already decided I'll be buying the rest of the series, not just for the Aunt, more for my own curiosity. Because now that I've been somewhat spoiled as to events down the track, I want to see how they happen and how he changes.
Got plenty of Hindi movies to watch, though. Yay!
