a) Dude, Gary Cooper's beautiful ... aside from the ears. I always thought I knew what he looked like and what his acting was like but no, I knew nothing of the sort! The sensitivity and sensuality of his face, omg. I mean, watch this,
2.20 to 3.20. A whole minute, dear god! Mind you, I could vomit on Frank Capra's American nationalism and I winced a little at the heavyhanded social conscience shit which totally does not work for me in the here and now of cinema already so influenced by Capra's idealism but really Mr Deeds Goes To Town did win me over. Occasionally clumsy shot, some strange staging but such a winning blend of cynicism, humour and goodness. And god, I just love Jean Arthur. She's so real and so intelligent, always. A woman's woman.
b) I really should have discovered
Sound Lab months ago. Only found it now cos I was setting the alarm for tomorrow and the radio had wandered away from the Js so I was lying on my bed, re-reading Pratchett while waiting for the station tag and goddamn me if what was playing wasn't pretty damned mesmerising.
c) Currently trying to find said track ... fascinating minimalist industrial yet dreamy noise ... possibly Syntax TerrOrkester? Not sure. Or was it Chris Clark? Gah! No, I'm just going to have to wait until she uploads the playlist. Goddamn it.
d)
Douglas Kahn. 19th November. MCA.
e) Looks I'm going to have to restart that bureaucracy insanity. Or I don't get to go to New Zealand for my birthday.
